display 4bit error

My display properties only allow me to set sisplay at 4bit. When I click on Intel Extreme Graphics, it won't open. Can't open from the C files either. I have an idea it was corrupted through Nabisco's (yup as in cookies & crackers!) gaming site.

Here's the problem: you have the wrong driver loaded for the video. Right away you said that you click on Intel Extreme Graphics and it doesn't open. Then right under that in the System Info list, you show that the motherboard is running Via/S3 Unichrome IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor). Intel and Via are completely different companies and they each have their own completely different video chips and require their own completely different drivers. It seems that somehow the Intel Extreme drivers got installed for the Via/S3 video chip. How? Who knows. But here's the link to the driver you need: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=1&CatID=1160 You'll have to select the correct driver from the list provided. It'll be easier if you know your exact chipset numbers. You can get the chipset specs from Everest or PCwizard or a similar system info tool. If you're having trouble with the chipset info, post the make and model of your motherboard or PC, and we'll try to help. You can get the motherboard make/model from one of programs listed below, or another similar system info tool....

THat explains why I can't download the drivers from the Restore CD!! I bet the Intel drivers are the original drivers. I just spent 4 hours with Gateway/EMachine techs & they had no idea. I kept pleading with them to take over my computer & sniff around rather than guessing. In the end, the tech disabled my VIA driver. I'm so brain weary that I have no idea what graphic is running this thing! I do know, the display is back to 32bit. I had a motherboard issue a year ago & I forgot to give the tech doing the repair, the Restore CD that came with the machine so the tech installed, I'm guessing, the VIA/53g UniChrome. Do you think I should reinstall the VIA UniChrome?

I don't know. I'm confused now. You said the tech had you disable the Via/S3 Unichrome, and that you now have 32bit graphics. In order for me to help you out here, I really MUST know EXACTLY what graphics chip you're running. Go to your Control Panel, select Display, click the Settings tab and post what it says in the 'Display:' box. Also while in the Control Panel, select System, click the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button, and click the little plus sign next to Display Adapters and post what it says there. If there are any red X or yellow question marks or exclamation points, post that info also....

 

Or you can run Everest or PCwizard to get all the info you need. If you can also post the motherboard make and model. You said it's an EMachine, but that you had a motherboard problem in the past. This tells me that the motherboard has been replaced, and the RestoreCD you have will NOT work for the new board as it was created for the original factory board.

 

Under Display Adapters it lists "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" with a yellow exclaimation next to it. Any other info I can post, let me know. In Display, under Settings there is no info or anything that reads "display." Under Advanced, all info is "unavailable."

OK! Go to Add/Remove programs and be sure the Intel Extreme software has been uninstalled. Then install the Via/S3 Unichrome video drivers. Reboot, and all should be well. After the driver has been installed, go to the Device Manager, under Display Adapters, it should say "Via/S3 Unichrome..." and in the Control Panel, click Display, click Settings, and there it should say something like "Plug and Play Monitor on Via/S3 Unichrome" and you should have numerous resolution settings on the 'slider'.

 

Hey DLB....I had to write to thank you again for your help. After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I finally decided the job was over my head & paid $30 to Driver Detective for help. They did a great job in installing the proper drivers for the VIA controllers. $30 is better than sending it out or doing an eMachine Restore from disk (as suggested by the eMachine/Gateway tech) & losing everything on my HD.
But I wanted to thank you because you pointing me in the right direction & gave me correct info.
