I have an ASUS A8V-VM SE Socket 939 Micro ATX Motherboard and I bought a VGA MSI NX8400GS-TD256EH 8400GS RT Video Card, both within the last few months.

Recently, whenever my computer has been on for over 24 hours, icons get blackened. When I reboot, they're back to normal. Could the video card be defective?

    Hello Denise,
what are your screen saver and power saver settings?

Power settings is to turn off the monitor (plain black screen) after 20 minutes. I have to click on the screen to have it come back on.

I have no screensaver since my monitor shuts off after 20 minutes.

I had a very similar problem my self recently, turned out to be a driver problem. Have you tried updating or reinstalling the latest drivers? Not just the video card drivers the motherboard (chipset) drivers as well.

These are the drivers that I updated last week:

    - Asus Bios Update v 71401
    - Nvidia - 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql
    - Nvidia 175.19_geforce_winxp_64bit whql
    - Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver V5.10.0.5296
    - Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R1.96
    - SATA Controller Card 3124_x64_11130_logo
    - SiI3726 Firmware (for SATA HUB)
    - SiI3726 Firmware Update Utility (for SATA HUB)
    - VIA Hyperion Pro v 518a package (which includes):
    . . . INF V3.00A
    . . . AGP V4.60A
    . . . V-RAID V5.70A and RAID Tools v5.40
. . . VIA IDE Falcon Storage Device driver v2.51A

I wonder if it's just a corrupt icon cache. There is an option in TweakUI to repair the cache. If you haven't got TweakUI it's available here :)

I think you hit the nail on the head. I had 2 icon folders for icons that I downloaded myself. A few days ago, I decided to combine the icons into one folder.

After you recommended TweakUI, I remembered that I already have TweakUI for XP Pro x64 (but I didn't know what it was for). When I try to run it, I received an error message and it wouldn't finish. I then installed the one at the link that you provided but that one unzipped only 4 files but no .exe or other file to run the program. I then did a search for TweakUI x64 and downloaded TweakUI for x64 Edition 2.2. It wouldn't work either. :confused

If I remember correctly there should be an inf file. Right click on that file then select install. :)

    Hi Yargwell . . .

I resolved the problem in a different way. I've had a lot a problems finding software and programs for XP Pro x64 that I bought Vista x64. I'm having more problems with Vista x64 than I did with XP Pro x64, LMAO!

    Thanks for helping . . . Denise

Hi Denise, glad to see you solved it "another way" - we are always interested in how--loose connection, poorly seated graphics card, missed off a little power lead ?
    It could help others.
Persist with Vista x64 - the only real problem driver for me with Vista Premium was for my old Mustek scanner - that was because there was not a x64 driver for it.
Other than that I honestly have no problems.Better security , too.
    Otherwise compatability mode solves anyproblems.

I uninstalled Vista x64 last night. It couldn't install my motherboard's software so that I couldn't do much with it. I couldn't install some Vista x64 programs because it needed files, maybe ones that are on my motherboard's disk. I have a controller card and it wouldn't install the firmware for it even tho it was the Vista x64 version. I couldn't update files because the files were still on my motherboard's disk . . . you get the picture.

The only reason that I wanted Vista x64 was because Microsoft was putting its energy into it and XP Pro x64 had gone by the wayside. I also didn't like some of the features of Vista x64, so l decided that since XP Pro x64 ran much better than Vista x64 on my machine, I'd switch back.

Maybe you can help me with one thing tho. I can't find the setting to move things without it looking like an ocean wave. It's make me nauseous. I went into Display > Appearance > Effects and tried each of the settings but none of them changed the ocean wave effect when scrolling.

You remember the pages for downloading the drivers for your motherboard, then you don't need the disc, just download, first from Asus site .

It can be frustrating trying to get things to work, when drivers will not install.

I would (and do) download all the drivers, and updates for any system that I work on, or, with, and save them to a folder, then I burn them to a cd, and lable, and put them aside, in case of problems like this. Occasionally, there are one , or, two that need to be installed as downloaded.
I will look back later to see if you have managed.

I hope this will help, Denise.:hammer or, :celebrate

I've been working on my pc for over 24 hrs so I'm a little miscombobulated right about now.

I checked out the website for MSI Live Update 3 but it's late so I have a go at it tomorrow.

Someone gave me this method to stop the seawaves:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "SmoothScroll"=dword:00000000

    I haven't tried it yet.

Asus support basically stopped in 2006, some 2007 updates. The only one I downloaded and installed before I switched to Vista x64 was Quiet N Cool, or is it Cool N Quiet, lol. I don't think that looking to ASUS for more updates in the future will be fruitful.

When I initially installed Si3124_x64_11130_logo driver for my SATA Controller Card, it installed very easily. After I switched to Vista x64 and then back to XP Pro x64, it won't install. There's no longer an .exe file, the same with SiI3726 Firmware and SiI3726 Firmware Update Utility. I'm going to have a go at this again tomorrow.

It was good to hear from you again baklogic. :)

One way that might help you is to copy the whole disc (s) to your hard drive, and see if you can then see the .exe fies, and run them from there
Having enjoyed boot problems when I tried installing Vista first, then, XP, and found difficulties getting my second hard drive to format with XP, it seems that once you have installed Vista it messes up the hard drive a bit.
Using HyperOs, I got over it easily, as it sorts out boot sequences, and references when it copies Vista, or, XP, and when restoring a backup from the same hard drive, it can install on any partition, and re reference the boot files.
I know there have been methods of solving this by editing in the registry, but I tend to be too lazy for that.
I only mentioned the problems that I had with the hard drive, as I found others had problems, too, at first, with the Vista bootloader messing them about- and I have seen references to .exe files not being seen, after a Vista reversal to XP, and those appear to have used the Vista disc to FULLY format, prior to intalling XP, to solve their problem. However I have not had to do that.

I don't have the drivers and firmware on disks. I downloaded the files from Silicon Image sites. I'm going to try removing the controller card again (sheesh!) and see what happens when I try to install the software again.

    What is HyperOs?

A new problem arose. I'll bring it up here and maybe move it to another thread. Occasionally, what I reboot, it stops at USB devices and it won't continue. I have to turn off all of my ext hdds and reboot and it reboots all the way. I don't know what's causing this because all the ext hdds are recognized in My Computer.

Try the MSI auto for your video driver, but it could help if you reset the monitor from the beginning - like when you get it from new to get rid of waves, perhaps adjusting the moire setting.

HyperOs is my boon, but, unfortunately not free- perhaps majorgeeks may get an old free version. I know there are other cloning software free, but personally, I would not be without my HyperOs.
    http://www.hyperossystems.co.uk/

One click is good enough for most, and gives up to 4 partitions.
I use the geek version, but one click does the same basically.
Its not free, but you can put it on anytime, before formatting, or after setting up Vista, or, XP.
In your case , as you are using x64 operating systems, it gives you the cance to keep an installation, and come back to it, when you have time to "play" with it.
I tend to have 200/250 gb hard drives, and at present, I have mine set up with Vista x64, and XP X32.
When I setup Vista x64, first time, I did it clean hard drive, and did not use my HyperOs.
    My mistake.
My second hard drive gave me problems, so, I did it the lazy way,I formatted, installed XP, then installed HyperOs.
This gave me partition suggestions, that I already wanted, so it shrunk my C: Partition to give me 3 x 50gb partitions, and one 100gb partition.(leaving my second hard drive unnattatched.

Then I installed Vista x64, on the second partition.I updated both systems, and allowed registration, put on the minimum requirements for each system, the fourth partition was left as a 50gb documents drive.
I then typed in the run box "sendto", and created a sendto to the documents drive on each partition, so that I could save copies of any documents that I created in either operating system.I also saved the updaters in the documents drive (XP autoupdater sits there), and any other downloads were directed there.

Then it took just clicked on the vista partition, and clicked backup- it was backed up to the C: partition in minutes. Then I did the same with Vista x64.
If I get a problem ( usually self inflicted ), I just open my other computers box, drag and drop the copy of that system onto the problem system, and I have a new clean system up and running within , usually 10 to 15 minutes, )
If you remember our little discussion on firewire/usb/sata and external sata, I connected my 250gb external hard drive via the sata 2 cable to the external sata connection on my motherboard, and found that external sata2 copied 15 gb in 15 minutes to the external drive.
Complete backup of all I needed, and I save all downloads to the documents drive, then backup to the external drive periodically.
I also use Avast on my X64 Vista partition, and AVG on my XP partition, and I have other copies of my original on my second hard drive, in 3 partitions, so that I can try different programs, in case I OVERLOAD TOO MANY PROGRAMS, AND CRASH THE DRIVE(I found XP runs better with around 4gb of compatable programs, but can play up if too many extras were added)
Then I can run different virus checks from the other partitions- Avast will find those dodgy .temp files that try to bug you in XP.
To be honest I have never had a virus in Vista x64, but I run checks from other partitions with different virus scanners to be sure.
Thats my system - takes a little time when setting up, but so quick to replace.

When I came across the problem of booting, with other hard drives connected, I found it was the bios setup, looking for other boot devices - check boot configuration- Hard drive/floppy/cd, --other devices, try changing to your prefered- if still set to cd, as you have formatted, it might cause that to happen.

    Hi Studiot

I cannot see why it would have been affected by any such action- it is purely for the operations that I described - It does not give an illegal copy of your operating system, as it will only work on the pc system copied from, albeit it will copy to another partition, and re-reference for only running on the mother system, or, to another hard drive connected to the mother system, for use in case of necessity.
If you tried to use that other hard drive on another system, you would get the windows blue/block screen, so it does nothing to impair copyright. It also has the capacity to backup, at set times, and to save as a rar file, or, in cd chunks - but would be no use to another computer, only to the mother computer.
In my case, I am always trying out silly programs, and it makes it easier to get back clean of the crap, without using crap cleaner, and registry tools ( although I do , sometimes use a registry program, if its not affected too much - Uninstalling programs can be a nuisance, causing some functions to play up, so I choose the lazy way- just replace the original, without taking hours to do it, finding the various program registration numbers etc:

I often mention what I use, but thought Denise might find it useful, as she has changed/formatted her system a few times since she built her system, last year, I think it was. With this, I can just open up "my other computers" , and click on a drive, and format from another partition, too instead of going to disc management- just a clicks, and it formats it, or, replaces it with the clean copy.

As I understand it, this utilty must be in Microsoft's favour, and really replaces system restore, that I noticed no longer works properly once you have more than one operating system partition- the difference being that if you run a full scan of the partion before backing up, then you beat many virus/trojan attacks - mine have always been clean .
Sorry to appear to diverse on this thread, - my original comments were meant to be of use to Denise, and to save her keep downloading drivers - but I am only too pleased if others find the information useful.:rasberry:duck:highfive

I think you may have forgotten that I'm just about pc illiterate, LMAO! I have no idea what MSI is or where it is. I also don't know how to reset my monitor from the beginning. It's plug & play.

The waves have gone but I still get the blackened icons as shown in post #1. A reboot fixes it but I don't know what's causing it. Programs that I installed that might have a connection to the blackened icons after I formatted are:

    - Cool & Quiet
    - Dual Core Optimizer
    - nVidia Drivers

I don't think that the other programs that I installed, such as Dual Core Optimizer, MGI Photo Suite III, Microsoft Office, Advanced Windows Care Personal, etc, would cause this problem.

I changed the boot sequence in BIOS after I formatted, with my floppy drive first, DVD drive second and my hdd third.

Don't think negative, you have come on leaps and bounds since you single handedly put your computer together, with some very distant help from those here (All of who forgot to tell you about the motherboard stand-offs ), and are now becomming a very capable "PC FIXIT".

I have not had reason to use this service, but if I had your graphics card, and the problems you are experiencing, I would at least try this fix.
As discussed by by ACE256, the graphics driver, and, have you installed the chipset driver, too ? you can get the chipset driver from the motherboard site.

    Further on your .exe problem,
Have you the LATEST windows installer ?- CHECK YOUR UPDATES
Have you updated.NET Framework ? as some programs need this to install.

    Just a quick update for now . . .

Thanks very much for the MSI link. It looks very good and that it will help me a lot.

I'm processing files for the next few hours and I can't turn anything off (as required) until they're finished.

I have .NET Framework 2 for x64 and all available updates from Microsoft installed. As for the chipset, I don't know if it's been updated because nothing is labelled 'chipset'.

    I also installed:

    1. SCSI Pass Through Direct - SPTD v1.56 (64 bit), which acts like ASPI for my os.
    2. VIA HyperionPro v518a http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/160213
    3. nVidia XP x64 Edition Display Drivers
    4. Asus A8V-VM SE Bios 0702
    5. Cool & Quiet
    6. Asus Update v71401 (VIA PSI to PCI Bridge Controller)

I had Nvidia-ForceWare-Driver Win XP 64 Bit 93.71 installed but I uninstalled it to see if the icons don't turn black. It they don't, I won't reinstall this file.

I've installed a few more files but I won't know anything until I reboot. If the files worked, I can then install the drivers for the controller card, physically remove the card and reinstall it, and install the drivers for the SATA HUB.

I discovered what chipset drivers are but I couldn't tell whether they're the latest version.

When my pc boots up, it says that I have SiI 3124 and BIOS v 6.3.18. These are what are needed for the controller card to work but it's not working. :mad

I went to MSI Live Update and downloaded and installed three files.

In the attachments, you'll see that the SCSI and RAID controllers are present when I click on Add New Hardware but when I select the SCSI and RAID controllers, it says that there are no drivers for it. The driver for it is SiI 3124, which is installed. :confused

SCSI and RAID controllers aren't in Device Manager. :banghead

I guess I'll keep digging. :major

I was getting tired of trying different drivers in different combinations but I went into Device Manager one more time to see what was going on, but nothing changed. But I decided to make Windows happy and give it a shot at finding a driver for my Maxtor One Touch II ext hhd's, they're firewired. Well, it started to download files and I figured it would good to finally get rid of those yellow question marks for those hdds. Then all of a sudden, SCSI and RAID controllers was there in Device Manager!?!! I'm not even going to question it. Take a look . . .

Drives O, S, T and U are the 4 SATA ext hdds that I have connected to the controller card! Yea!!!! :-D :dancer

You are welcome to any help any of us offer, but sometimes a simple update can solve many problems, and so many forget to let windows look for them- actually, Vista does that very efficiently, at least in Vista x64 premium.
Just remember that Event viewer, and Device Manager can show you what is "acting up" in many cases.
Now save your drivers to a folder somewhere, on one of your spare hard drives, or on a cd.

At least you know its all o.k now - well done:clap:hyper:dancer:celebrate:highfive

Now, if I was in that position, just re installed everything, got all my drivers, I would make a complete backup, or, at least make a system restore point, before I messed it up. I explained how I back mine up, but I would like to think you have some means, other than system restore, to make a backup- I know Norton had ghost, but there are many alternatives-- BACK IT UP.:guns

When you feel up to trying Vista x64, again roflmao Think about partioning, or, and running both - you will find it pleasing to "beat it"- like you did when you solved this one;)

There's an Automated System Recovery Program that comes with XP Pro x64. It uses floppy disks. I did set a restore point last night.

The only problem I have now is that I installed more programs in order to get SCSI and RAID to work again. Some of those programs aren't needed but I don't know which ones. I had 3 VIA programs running. I deleted one and I then had no internet access, lol, so I did a system restore. Luckily, it worked. I'm going to delete one of each program type/version at a time, setting a restore point right before I do it to see which ones aren't needed.

I backed up all of my drivers onto a floppy disk just prior to formatting to Vista x64. When I put the disk in the dvd drive to restore it to XP Pro x64, there were no files on it. I can't explain that one. It said that it was complete and I assumed that all my drivers were on it. Next time, I'll check before assuming that they're there.

I won't try Vista for a long time. My hardware is incompatible with it. I would like to add XP Pro 2000. It's 32-bit but I used it for a long time and I liked it, and it will be good for those programs that aren't available for XP Pro x64. But I want to recuperate from this fiasco before I do anything else. I have the room for it, the XP Pro 2000 disk, and Partition Magic, so it's just a matter of time and guidance ;)

It was so strange . . . I've clicked on those Maxtor One Touch II yellow question mark a number of times since I installed x64 but there never were any drivers for it. I really just did it again for the heck of it. Little did I know . . . I still don't understand how that solved the problem. The drivers were for 1394 front storage ext hdds.

One of the problems of having too many hard drives attatched externally is the booting problem that you had - same if you leave a usb stick in. The system sometimes goes to them, depending on bios set , so the firewire could have been the problem driver, not so much the hard drive.
I have had a start up problem, in the past, when a usb stick was left in- easily corrected, but makes you wonder what is going on. I've been playing about trying to get a bootable system on a few usb sticks, different variations etc: - my mad moments :foolish, I do try loads of different ideas out, but its nice to achieve something, like you have done, again, as it boosts you to a higher plain. rolleyes:duck:hammer

I don't know what a stick is unless you mean RAM. I have 17 of them now and very few of them are the same and I've never had a problem with my external drives to be recognized by My Computer. The only problem that I had was the recent one, where boot-up wouldn't get past searching for USB (forgot the exact wordage).

All I need now is for the company to send me back a new SATA HUB and I'll be all set, hopefully, lol.

This thread went way off line from it's original subject.

I still have this problem. Could the problem be that I installed one of these:

    - Nvidia 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql
    - Nvidia 175.19_geforce_winxp_64bit whql

They're supposed to be compatible with my graphics card. Could it be a damaged graphics card?

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Sorry. we diversed, but the MSI driver download was the fix, I had believed, but you may have bits and bobs of other video drivers left.
This icon problem seems to be x64 related, and nvidia drivers
It might help to go to the driver properties, and lower the graphics acceleration.
The latest graphics drivers appear to uninstal previous drivers, before installing.
However, if these are still on your system,
Nvidia 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql and - Nvidia 175.19_geforce_winxp_64bit whql - this second one seems to give the problem in x64 systems.
I would uninstall them, and start fresh with the MSI UPDATE UTILITY.
It could be worth running crap cleaner, or, nvidia driver cleaner, to get rid of left over to ensure a clean graphics driver install.

The only nVidia program that's in my pc now is "Win2K AMD64 175.19 x64 edition display drivers." It's the latest update. I tried to find Nvidia 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql but the one I found was only for 2000/XP. I think I'll leave well enough alone for right now and let the icons blacken. I have an LCD screen and I lowered the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels. When I went a bit lower, the graphics were choppy.

I also have to sort out the various drivers that I installed when I was trying to get the controller card to work. I know that I don't need them all. I'll probably start another thread for this if I have questions.

I use Advanced Windows Care Personal for a cleaner. CCleaner wipes out necessary x64 files. I'll check out the nVidia Driver Cleaner though . . . it sounds good.

    Thanks again, my friend :)

I guess it's all in the name of a search that will give you the best results. Since I was looking for 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql, I tried different combinations of the words, such as 93.71 forceware, nvidia 93.71, etc. What I needed to search for was 'nVidia Display Drivers.' :mad

Why do they make it so hard? :confused

But I found 93.71_forceware_winxp64_english_whql and others at nVidia Windows Server/XP 64-Bit Extended Driver Archive:

I hope someone else can use the info.

I agree that sometimes leave as is, until you are less stressed with it.
Nvidia shows the same 175.16 driver, but looking around, this x64 driver is giving the problem you have with the icons,to many others.
I did find this one particularly useful to clean out nvidia drivers, perhaps for later reference, unless someone else knows a good download for driver removal that does not give problems amongst majorgeeks downloads.

I found that site also but the page won't open for me. I get a plain black screen. Maybe because I have x64?

I'm still having 2 problems that were mentioned in this thread.

    1. In uninstalled the Win2K AMD64 175.19 x64 edition display drivers but I'm still getting the blackened icons.

    2. My computer still occasionally freezes up when it searches for USB controllers/adapters/devices when booting up and I have to reset to start again.

Any thoughts about what I can try in order to fix these things?

"as happy as a fly on "
    Must have dried up :-D

As I said that 175.16 driver, (and 175.19) appears to be the root of the blackened icon problem

I would try to get a driver cleaner working, as it seems quite possible that there is a driver issue.
Have your drivers handy, and check the MSI automatic driver search, and installer. It would be best to remove any video driver, use the cleaner, and then try the RE INSTALL THE MSI ONE.:(

Try direct from American download site

I found this beta driver, with some good chat about it, if you clean up, try this, if you prefer.;)
Sometimes you have to try different one's and the latest is not always the best, sometimes going back to something like version 169 can help. Can be painstaking, when the problem is around, and nvidia have not come out with a fix, as that seems to be the situation.

And did you ever get Tweakui to work?

Thanks baklogic, I'll give them a try.

Hi Yarwell :) . . . I didn't get Tweakui to work. I tried 3 versions of it but I received a message that was either an error message or a message that said that it wasn't meant for my os.

The exact wording that appears during start up is "Initializing USB Controllers." It doesn't proceed until I turn off all of my ext hdds (USB 2.0, Firewire and SATA) and reset.

The 2 links that you put in your post don't work for me. The first one gave me a blank black page and the second one said "File Not Found"

I use Advanced Windows Care that cleans the registry. It may leave some junk in there but it usually catches a lot each time I run it. It cleans other things as well, an all-in-one cleaner.

I was just thinking . . . is there a USB controller driver/firmware or something that I can download and install or a test to see why this is happening?

I've been searching the net for a solution to the Initializing USB Controllers proglem. This is a solution that one person came up with :cry

    and another one:
I haven't looked into BIOS yet to see if there's anything named "USB controller." I have about 9 USB 2.0 ext hdds. If I disable the USB controller, would the USB 2.0 ext hdds still work?

    You asked for it,
" is there a USB controller driver/firmware or something that I can download and install or a test to see why this is happening?"

Well, if you want to go into this area, I am not familiar with it, so ....................

Have a look here, as you can , apparently, test it.

    The article states

Since I have XP Pro x64, US version, I'm not sure if it'll work but I'll give it a shot. I'll also look around for similar articles that pertian to XP Pro x64 and US versions.

    Thanks baklogic.
