Display properties Screen Saver

I recently began experiencing a strange issue. I am having trouble selecting a screen saver. No matter what I select the 'Display properties' box (screensaver tab) crashes or end up "not responmding" I have gone into the administrative tools and see many errors associted with this and displayed as an "application hang (101)" error. Below is the event record associated with it. No matter what scrrensaver I select, it crashes. If Im away and the screensaver does go on, it runs erratic and slow, and when I come back to try and activate the desktop, its slow responds slowly and as in slow motion. All programs work fine, no other errors. Any help appreciated and thanks. I have XP Pro, running McAfee firewall and virus protection, Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, MS Anti- Spyware.
