i have a 300GB external USB drive. i call it E drive.. its formatted NTFS.. and has 5 gig of data on it.. is there a way i can "divide" this into TWO "drives" calling one E and one F and not losing the current data?

What you want to do is create another "partition" on your flash drive. Windows recognizes partitions as drives. I would try EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition. I don't know for sure whether it will partition flash drives but I'm inclined to believe it will.

    A 300GB drive isn't a flash drive.

I never trust anything when I'm working on partitioning a drive. If it were me in your situation, I'd copy the 5GB of data onto another computer so I had it safe somewhere. If that isn't an option, then I'd spend the time burning the data to DVDs. Then I'd partition the 300GB external hd. Normally, I use a linux live CD to do this because I had a bad experience with Partition Magic/Boot Magic so I tend to avoid programs made for windows. After it's partitioned, you can copy the data from the other computer or DVDs back on to the external hard drive.

Oh, shoot, what was I thinking! :-o I know a 300GB could not be a flash drive.

Ditto on all that. Re: the linux live CD, are you referring to the gparted partitioning utility?

Actually for me, no. I've never used that one. I use diskdrake (probably something from Mandrake, now Mandriva) which is on an old PCLinux 2006 live disk I have.

I need step by steps with pictures and this explained it in baby steps that I could understand.
    Code:

although it is based on installing PCLinux, I use this partitioning tool even for windows installs. Once I have my partitions set up, I can install whatever OS I prefer.
