I don't know if it's really a problem and I hope I'm in the right forum...

I have an Emachines, the sticker says:
    3000+AMD Anthlon XP Processor
160 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    512 DDR SDRAM at 333MHz

Anyhow, I ran test for my download/upload speed and it said

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-06-17 01:38:53 EST:
    1488 / 231
    Your download speed : 1488 kbps or 186 KB/sec.
That is 60.4% worse than an average user on mchsi.com

    Your upload speed : 231 kbps or 28.9 KB/sec.
That is 18% worse than an average user on mchsi.com

I was wondering if there was anything I could do to increase my download speed, considering that it's supposedly so much worse than other people's on my serivice. Thanks for the help!!

It all hinges on many things,

    1. What speed have you paid for from your ISP? ( 2mb prehaps )
as you may not have chosen the highest speed they offer in your area, do check with your supplier Mediacom. That speed maybe correct and the fastest your paid for package gets.

Their are overheads to the internet in TCP/IP and ATM ( packet loss ) which can zap 13-20% off your speed straight away, so you wont always get the full speed you connect at.

    2. Online tests are subject to false readings as at the point you did your test many others may have been also testing, so they report slower speeds than normal ( do the tests at various points in the day/night... sometimes a good thing to do them early hours of the morning, when many in your country are sleeping ) plus the backbone of the internet in your location may have just been slower... depends on all sorts of things, like.. a large software download was released and many decided to get it on that day, to a few routers down and net traffic re-routed thus adding more users to yours.

    3. Try another test, I generally use one fom my country and one from distance to compare, but try this one

Thanks. I'm not sure what I paid for, I just know that the technician I talked to said when I indicate at how fast I download, check that it's a T1-T3 line. (I don't really know what that means.) I'll try the tests you suggested and compare different times. I just kinda wanted to post and get some opinions on what the problem could be. Thanks again!!

Judging from your results it seems that you have the typical avarge 1.5Mb/sec. DSL.

Your numbers are OK, ignore the "Silly" claims of the Online inaccyrate Meters, they mean reaaly Nothing.

I had DSL for 7 years, finally had to go cable. Believe if those numbers are right, that is a good speed.
