Do anti-Spy apps cripple MS Validation????

    Friends

three systems identical: compaq Evos with Win XP Pro Supposedly pre-installed... valid stickers on the systems. I'm trying to get them all on the web, legitimized, updated etc.

on one, I installed Spyware Blaster as a preventative measure, before trying to update anything. Makes sense, doesn't it..... no unprotected, errrrr..... intercourse with the world at large.

on that system, it could not, would-not validate the OS. I tried contacting MS, they sent me to Compaq, who flailed about pointlessly [they think I'm trying to grayware the OS] and went to HP and someone finally said call this number and pay money and they'll send you disks. The OS "Works", it just isn't validated and so will not update.

the other system, which is identical to the first [they both rolled out of leases together in a uniform net environment] seemed to go ok, but I did NOT install anything other than MS updates on it.

So, did Spyware Blaster put a measure in place the compromises something's ability to register and validate the OS Product Key??

    i'm stumped.

Suggest that you "Uninstall Spyware Blaster" then run CCleaner available here at MG, then try connecting to MS for "Validation". Hope that helps

Yes that is the full download of SP2 and will do

Note: to install without problems your PC must be free of Malware and its best to disconnect from internet and disable all security apps, then run that package.

I think BCGray is right to say uninstall & try, but just wanted to let you know that I am running "Spyware Blaster" on 3 computers and have never from day 1 had an update problem. I just reinstalled them all from beginning to end with Syware Blaster and none of them had problems for valadation from MS. In fact 1 of them had SP1 and I had to do ALL updates to SP2 online, thankful for highspeed, and even that machine had no problem with validation and spyware blaster being there.

    Have a good day,

Can I point out that you've mentioned several products yet none of them is actually a firewall which would probably be the most important thing when going on the internet with a non up to date OS.

OK, problem resolved. I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919868/en-us
which when read properly gave me a clue. [a first for ms kb]
Went back and checked, AFTER disabling Spyware Blaster [which was the ONLY package I had loaded on this otherwise unprotected rig]. Sure enough, though I visited MS validation sites several times, nothing was resident in the Add-ons. So, went to both Advanced and Security settings in IE and made changes that were admittedly promiscuous, at least as concerned SIGNED Active-X... basically anything smelling of 'signed' gets to execute. shut it down and restarted [maybe overkill], went right back to the Validation site again and it all worked slick. Lesson learned.

Also, the aforementioned evils were experienced BEFORE SP2... call it SP-Zero. I also found a KB article on SP2 that mentioned a correction of some oddities re: validation..... for all I know the application of SP2 may have been the real cure. I can't distinguish

thanks all for your help. I love Spyw-blaster and have run it on everything I have... just in the future I will not load such measures until Win is entirely up to date on the initiation.
