Do I Actually Need Windows Defender ?

    Greetings Geeks -

In a recent post I explained that I cannot seem to update Windows Defender. Auto Update does not work, and the manual install executable mpas-fe.exe won't work either. I get a "file corrupt" message. Despite re-downloading from MS official site.

So, screw it. If I have Zone Alarm, SuperAntiSpyware, and Antivir running, do I even need Defender? If not, how will I disable all of the task bar messages I know will light up like a Christmas Tree ?

    Thanks for any input.

    Hello, 20Valve

You do need a "real-time" malware blocker application. Have you attempted to find a solution in our Software Forum?

So I guess SuperAntispyware is not real time? If not, is there an another program you can suggest instead of Defender so I can turn it off? I can't seem to update Defender anyway, it will not autoupdate and the mpas-fe.exe keeps coming up as "corrupt." Very frustrating.

I did not consider the Software Forum, I thought since it was malware protection I dealing with, the appropriate forum would be the current one.

    Hello, 20Valve

Both SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes' offer "real-time" protection only in paid-for versions ( and they are both very good )... their freeware are "on demand scanners" only.

;) In this instance, when we're not dealing with a malware infection thread per se, an application not properly updating or working is more of a topic for the Software Forum. But I'm happy to provide you with info for your protection.

A Big Thanks dr. moriarty. I will investigate the paid versions of said programs. And thanks for the tip on posting!
