Just recently i have encountered a problem with my computer. Whenever i open a program i get this little window that pops up that says :

(whatever the name of the program is that i opened) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to us. WE will treat this report as confidential and anonymous. To see what data this error report contains click here..

and then theres other buttons that say Debug, send error report, and dont send... and whatever bottum you press will close down whatever you had open. This happens with the internet explorer, aim, limewire, microsoft word..etc..

does anyone know anything i can do for this because i really dont want to have to sit on the phone with the people that can help me fix this or call up a computer guy.. i want to fix this on my own also because this tends to happen to me alot so if i learn how to fix it ill know for future reference. This is definantly a virus, right?? well someone please help me.. if you need more info ill give you all the info you need just help me ..

    thanks

This will stop the error reporting>>

    Disabling Error Reporting

By default, WindowsXP will request to report application errors to Microsoft.
    To turn this off:
    1. Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
    2. Select Properties / Advanced
    3. Click on the Error Reporting tab
    4. Check Disable error reporting

See what happens after doing that. You might have to reboot.

Err, Far be it for me to disagree with someone of higher rank, Doofus, but won't shutting off the notification just hide the problem?

Surely members of this forum would be better helping j174176 find out why his programs are encountering problems and having to close in the first place? Surely, these are not normal activities on a healthy machine, particularly if it's happening regularly.

I can't actually help with this problem as I don't know enough, so I'm just sticking my nose in here

Not necessarily a virus at all, but to be honest rather than stop windows error reporting I would want to know what the exact error is first, so a fix or cause can be found!

Which windows version you using and is it upto date?

What are you doing at the time of the error, I notice it happens with a few apps, so can the error be recreated using the same steps each time or is it random?

What is the error message in full?

If you suspect a virus then have you ran through these steps ( do not post a HijackthisLog as its not needed ) http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

That's why I said, "See what happens after doing that."

Error reporting is really annoying because some, maybe most of the time it does nothing for the user.....for me anyway.

If it stops popping up & nothing is playing up then for me that's the way to go.

Again that's why I said, "See what happens after doing that." If it keeps playing up then now it's time to go to the next step.......whatever that may be.

Oh & I'm not of higher rank. Just someone trying to help. :)

I have gotten three or four of those not that long ago, as for why I have no idea. But, it didn't occur until after I had either overworked my pc with too many things going on in a browser, like too many tabs open at once, or when my pc had been on waayyy toooo long. Since, I don't leave it on overnight or anything, it never really stays on that long, and I do have an older pc in my room. Yet, I at first pressed close and it ended with me having to restart to get my pc back to normal. The other times I pressed debug and everything worked fine right after. It usually occurs with browsers or things that need to connect for stuff like updates. I always leave these warnings on and have had no other such popups.

Assuming you are using XP and have and uptodate AVirus program going I would be doing the following. Clean out all the accumulated crap on your computer - CrapCleaner is a good and effective tool - far as I can recall it's here and a freeby on this site.
Close down all programs at startup that are not needed. Many programs tend to include themselves in the startup and you only really need them when you want them rather than having them run in the background.
If the above does not solve the problem go to Run and type "sfc /scannow"
without the quotes and see if that does the job

Well im using Windows XP and actually i dont have an uptodate virus program because i was also going to ask what is a good virus protection program.... i also dont know much about computers so i looked for a forum to help me, so everything i said in my first post is exactly what the error report says, it pops up whenever i open any type of program and not at a random type exqactly when i open it so i just like hide it and go on with what i was doing i meen if i dont press anything then nothing happens but if i press cancel send error report or dont send it closes out everything i was doing with that program, so i just need help its not going away on its own this is something i have to fix. i will give you any information to help me that you need

Hey there, Welcome to Major Geeks. :)
Let's back up a bit. Can you post info about your system, such as speed of processor, size of hard drive, how much RAM you have, and things like that? I'm thinking that will be very helpful to aid in finding the problem.
And, if I were you, I'd download an antivirus RIGHT NOW, and scan.
Let's just start there, and see where to go.
Here's a very good AV program to try.

Hello j174176.:) I'm moving your thread over to the Malware Forum so you can get assistance cleaning out your computer. For starters you have W32.Beagle.DV, SpyArsenal AIM Logger (key logger) and Istbar (home page and search hijacker). There are additional issues that need to be resolved.

Please be sure to follow the steps in the order given and install HijackThis as instructed. You currently have HJT installed in an unsafe location. You have it here: C:\Documents and Settings\Jessica\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WHQ7OPAB\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe and it needs to be here: C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

Make sure when you follow the directions that AbbySue gave to you that you pay attention to step # 3 and uninstall all but one antivirus application. You have both McAfee and Symantec installed right now.

And if what you said earlier is true about your antivirus programs not being up to date. Please tell me! If they are out of date, you should uninstall both of them and install one of the free one we recommend (that is assuming you do not plan on resubscribing to McAfee or Symantec).

well i already did the read and run me first and i saved the logs so i dont understand what i should be doing next.. like i said im not the best with computers so if you tell me to do one thing im not going to understand, but for now im going to start off with deleting McAfee and Symantec and then downloading one of your free ones

You need to run MS Windows Defender from the READ ME.
You need to attach your Bitdefender log from the READ ME.
You need to follow the instructions in step 3 of the READ ME and uninstall all but one AV.
You need to answer questions about the antivirus applications in my previous message.
You need to fix what AbbySue stated in her message and in the instructions of step 7 of the READ ME
And then attach a new HJT log after one or more of the antivirus applications are uninstalled and HijackThis has been installed properly.
