Those buttons are mechanical, so they can break.

Sure they break. And being mechanical, they simply wear out over time.

If you keep your operating system and security software current, and you are not "click-happy" on every unsolicited download, link, attachment and popup you see, it is not likely malware.

Like many things, you get what you pay for. A $5 mouse is a cheap mouse. And a cheap mouse is likely to break sooner rather than later.

Some mice last longer than others. While Digerati is right about most cheap mice failing easily, a higher price doesn't always mean a mouse will last forever.

Generally I stick with Logitech. Watch the sales at Amazon, Office Depot, etc. and you can often find a bare bones one in the $10-$15 range. I found a nicer ergonomic Logitech with extra programmable buttons and a five year warranty at Sam's Club a few months ago for $20.

To be sure, I never suggested anything will last forever. In fact, I said mice (regardless price or quality) I said, "being mechanical, they simply wear out over time."

And for that matter, until Man can create perfection 100% of the time, there is still chance the top quality mouse in the world can fail right out of the brand new box.

I've had good luck with Logitech too, if I stay away from their budget entry levels. And I don't know who makes the mice for Microsoft, but I really like them too. I have a Wireless 5000 on this system now and its been working great since I built this computer for W10 in 2015.

My mouse is so old the sticker on the bottom has worn off. Probably more than $5 but not much more....
