Well I hope I have some luck tomorrow and on Sunday I've just put a bet on the Formula 1 racing,£10 on Lewis Hamilton to get pole position in qualifying and £20 on Michael Schumacher to finish on the podium.

    Luck me a lady tonight!

Most of this page and the whole "Testing" thing with cards etc is why I said the virs idea would make sense, I'm not saying I believe it but testing people for luck will never work because luck is so incredibly random that it cannot be tested on set dates.

Again, the virus thing, how can you test what kind of cold you have if you book a test 3 months in advance?

As for controlling cards, the only way to do that is with hand control, not mind control.

    Also defining luck.
Pretty wides open question really since Good Luck IMO is something good or positive that happens to people when the odds are against them (thats a phrase Rikky, I didn't actually mean odds mathematically :p )
Winning lotto, tied in a race only for the favortite to fall at the line, dropping a glass and it not breaking, buying a TV and getting a home cinema delivered, etc etc.

Bad luck is the exact oposite, which is what spurred my question in the first place.
In the past six months I have had 2 DVD players, a dvd burner die, my PS3, a TV, my Van, microwave and freezer. split my gut been off work, insurance wont pay out even thought I'm in the right, wife books a week off when I have my op and they move my date so she loses 2 weeks wages, wife gets put up for full time, they remove the full time position, perfect job for me comes available with my uncle in law the boss, 90% chance of getting it, they disolve the position.
This is a brief and simplified look at aproxx 50% of the things gone wrong for me in the past 6 months, not to mention previos.
This.......is bad luck because coisidence isn't THAT powerful :p
Otherwise give me a scientific reason why all this happend to 1 person in such a short span of time.

This isn't a sob story, this is the exact reason I started the thread, because after all this and more not mentioned, I wonder why so much crap. Is all this simply chance or coinsidence?.........really?

Basically in the past while, if it cold go wrong, it did rolleyes

I could tell you immigration story for more proof if you like :-D

But that worked out well so it was a lot of bad luck followed by a chunk of good :-D becase I got my girly and we're happy, poor but happy lol

But on the grand scale compared to many others, I consider myself lucky, the wife and I reckon the old saying "Lucky in love, unlcky in life" applies perfectly to us :)

So I figure in large I'm unlucky and like I said, many have bad things and good things happen occasionally, others have good things happen frequently and others have bad things happen frequently.

    The 3 sides of luck.

Ironically, Luck sonds very much like a word I used many times in all those situations :-D

Edit: also you notice my "U" key seems to work when it wants to, thats unlucky isn't it :-D

    Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary

    Main Entry: 1luck
    Pronunciation: \ˈlək\
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English lucke, from Middle Dutch luc; akin to Middle High German gelücke luck
    Date: 15th century

1 a : a force that brings good fortune or adversity b : the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual

    2 : favoring chance; also : success <had great luck growing orchids>

Could be true. If there is a force we call luck, and if that force has intelligence or can be influenced in some way, it could withdraw when being tested. Hence, the act of carrying out a test influences the test, which nullifies the results.
Not wishing to equate luck with divine intervention, I note that 'Do not test the LORD your God' is written in the Bible (Deuteronomy 6:16) - perhaps this would prevent any test of Christian beliefs being 'successful'.

    success = luck

    hardwork = success

    Why everybody look for shortcut?

  15. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

I don't think it's about shortcuts. Hard Work doesn't always produce success. I've worked hard my entire life but circumstances have null and voided that hard work.
I know what your point is, a friend of mine said it well once.

"People who sit at home waiting to win the lotto are the same people who stand in the same spott while hitch hiking. If you want to get to your destiniation faster, walk towards it with your thumb out, at least then if no one picks you up, you will eventually get there"

Hard work and Luck are 2 different things.
You could work hard and study and do everything right every day of your life and still be passed over for that promotion every time..... or the position you've worked so hard to obtain is disolved. Here is where I think luck plays it's game.

Because time is the enemy, so it seems. Everybody has got themselves into a big bad rush nowadays. It's now the modern way of life, faster is better in this day and age. Can't say I agree. Shortcuts are all the rage. Have been for years.

  17. silas

I believe luck can be few different things. I mean personally I have bad luck IMO. Nothing but bad things happen and I never get lucky. I mean I am lucky to have family/friends and GF. I remember this 1 time in my life I bought scratch off tickets when I had okay job. And I bought like 50 bucks worth of 1/2/5 dollar tickets.. and 1 10 dollar one. I took it home won got 70 bucks worth of winnings. Took tickets back 2 hours later got more.. Got some winning ones to add up to about 80 bucks took them back lost on each one.

  19. silas

    silas MajorGeek

lol I can agree with the who do you know thing. Specially with job/work. I know many people that got into a job because they knew someone(many times it was the parents of them that talked to get them into that job).

  20. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

    :-D

The Who you know thing, I am a perfect examples of that, I grew up in a small town (7000 people) on the East coast of England, family been there for litterally hundreds of years, I knew everybody pretty much and worked with my father to learn carpentry when I was young, I always had work even when I quit construction and just worked in other things, I always found a job quickly because of my network of people I knew.
Moved to Canada in 2005, struggling, I never understood how people just couldn't find work... until I moved here, without pieces of paper my years of experience mean nothing at all, I went straight back down to the bottom. I'm now building some form of network again and things are starting to open up slightly.
Life is so much harder when you don't know anyone. But I don't really see luck as a big part of that, you could say I was lucky because I knew everyone, but by the same token yo cold say I'm unlucky now becase I know no one.

It's a nice thought to say "You make your own luck in life" but sometimes life just has a way of helping or hindering you in ways completely out of your control.
And this is where Lady Luck steps in to play.

  21. darlene1029

    darlene1029 A Grand Lady- R.I.P. 06/06/2012

A person has no control over illness or death so you can't possibly make your own luck always.
That has to be rough moving to another country and starting all over good luck to you Ned

I add my best wishes also (note absence of 'L' word! :))
Occasionally true - especially of a child born in a slum in India, for example, but people who have the ability to look after themselves, and do, will, on average, do better than those who don't. We often have a fair degree of control.

lol Well I got a little more proof last night, it's 6:30am EST right now and in an hours time I'm heading into hospital for my operation.
So the rules are I was not to eat or drink anything past midnight, fair enough, no biggie.
I grabbed some frozen chicken balls and a few other things we could have for dinner, figured light stuff so no issues this morning.....got home around 6pm from picking the wife up, figured I'd cook around 7pm.
6:30ish the power goes out, can't cook.
Ednded up having a sandwich at about 11pm.
Power comes back on around 11:45.

Now are you seriously telling me there is no such thing as bad luck? :-D
