    I cannot STAND GOOGLE INSTANT.
I HATE the screen flashing and offering irrelevant suggestions when i google something. I am not an old lady, I'm not stupid, leave my google entries alone. Why anyone would want suggestions is beyond me - don't you know what you are looking for when you use GOOGLE ? When I use a REAL (book) dictionary, I know what word I'm looking for, I don't need other words thrown in my face. Today I finally had enough. Yes, i GOOGLED "I hate google instant" and after some searching through relevant forums - oh, by the way, i did not click on any of the "suggested" entries (I NEVER do), I found the solution !
I now have my home page set as :

    http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en

That google link will NOT slap you in the face with google instant OR auto complete.
If you hate google instant like I do, you will LOVE this link.
I found the solution on the following page :

Kinda why for better or worse I like Bing and Yippy (used to be called Clusty) Yippy is a cluster search engine and try it you may like it as its left side menu has options to narrow a search opposed to having to use search strings as in Google.

But I do feel that Google did need to give the option to turn it off to users with Google accounts though, but they do, so if you have a Google account, log into it and click the small cog to the right of your user name at the top right and choose Search Settings, then choose next to Google instant, choose Do not use Google Instant and save your prefs, sadly you will need to login to your account to use this setting as its not a global one.

Or try it without logging in but you may have to save the Google cookies from being deleted by your temp and junk cleaner as in CCleaner though.

I used duckduckgo for a while. Pretty good, but not quite as good as google.
    Using http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en
PERMANENTLY solves the autocomplete/google instant annoyances . AND you get to choose your own background. It is now my homepage .
I attached a screenshot of my new homepage with my chosen background. Best of all, NO AUTOCOMPLETE/GOOGLE INSTANT ! EVER !!

Yup I hate google instant,I run firefox with Noscript though which blocks Google instant.

No script can be pretty brutal at times though blacking almost anything so it does take some time to get it trained up running nice,in fact now I think about it you could set it up to just block the instant scipt on the google homepage and leave everything else alone.

Just disable all auto script blocking then manually select the google search box script.

Yeah i tired noscript and i agree, it was so aggressive, I uninstalled it . I do keep Flashblock though, but flashblock AND noscript pretty much means any website i go to, nothing is going to work unless I manually click it. I didn't bother training noscript, I think I'm ok without it and my new homepage. I'm happy for now, at least . I like the new homepage link and its customizable background image - and they give you a TON of background images to choose from.

Thanks FED UP. I now do not have Instant search. In that link you provided it noted that putting in the following in your blocked items list of Ad Block Plus will disable Instant.
    Code:
    http://www.google.com/extern_js/
So even when I totally allow Google with Noscript, I still do not have Instant.

    Yep. I'm a happy googler again .
I can't believe they would keep such an annoying feature. If you google "i hate google instant" you get : About 34,600,000 results . Seems like GOOGLE would get the message-or at least make it easier to permanently opt out .

Ok one thing : adding http://www.google.com/extern_js/ to AdBlock blocks the functionality of google IMAGES. In particular, if you do an image search, you will get the first page of images, but when you scroll down, no more images will appear. When I removed the http://www.google.com/extern_js/ from AdBlock, functionality to google images was restored.

I just went to this thread again from another thread. Thanks FED UP. I was wondering what the hell was happening to the images.

Tried that without logging in, with both the standard http://www.google.com and https://encrypted.google.com/ but it did Not work.

For google's own take on what the advantages are with Google Instant:
    About Google Instant

mjnc - I do not mean this as an insult to YOU, by ANY MEANS !

I couldn't care less what Google thinks the advantages are of Google Instant. It annoys the heck out of me, and it should be an OPT-IN preference instead of making it so difficult to get rid of. I don't want google or anyone else making suggestions on my searches.
Again, I mean NO OFFENSE to you whatsoever . I just cant stand google instant, and will NEVER use it .
    Thanks!

OK. That's fine with me; no offense taken.

Too bad you have to have an account and be logged in to use that preference setting.

Software designers do that sometimes when they think that you Should want this and you Should appreciate this,
they put it in without giving the user any means of deactivating the Feature.

Did for me, so tells us that Googles services are patchy and not great per region, so it seems users are going to get various mileage per setting, it may work for some and not others.
