I made cupcakes and I just about to make my frosting but I wanted to know if anyone knows for sure if I HAVE to refrigerate the cupcakes because of the frosting?

The ingredients for the frosting are : chocolate chips, milk, butter, sugar, & vanilla.

I don't think you do but I'm not sure and I don't wanna poison anyone tomorrow :-D

I would refrigerate them, just to make sure. The milk and butter will be much better off that way, plus, there's a good chance the cupcakes will be tastier as a result. They like being allowed to sit and settle. :)

I know I'm a little late on this one but I'd like to clear it up,sugar is a natural preservative its what keeps jam ect fresh,if you leave raw sugar or frosting out it doesn't go stale at all as bacteria can't live on it so you can't poison anyone but sugar is very hygroscopic so any moisture will bond with the sugar and turn the frosting runny,if you leave sugar out for a long period often a small pool of water will form if there is moisture in the air, believe it or not I learnt this from making rocket fuel:-D

Fridges are often damp but which can spoil the frosting and make your cake soggy but are usually O.K if you put it in an airtight Tupperware container, most people recommend a cool dry place.

In my experience it is certainly not necessary to refrigerate cupcakes with that frosting on them. I've made that frosting many, many times over the past 40+years and never have felt the need to refrigerate anything that I put it on.........and I've never poisoned anyone. In fact, that particular frosting can turn sugary if you refrigerate it, so I'd keep it out of the refrigerator. That's not to say you should store cake or cupcakes with the frosting on it in a hot place, for that could make the frosting begin to break down and 'melt' into the cake which is not very appetizing, although it's still not dangerous.

Thanks for the tips! Whenever I attempt to make cupcakes again at least now I know. :)
