So I get an email from my good college friend and room mate who, now that I've been out of college for 18 years, we really don't communicate regularly. One of those sending emails once in a long while type deals.

So, she sends me and email about '2 moons on August 27! Once in a lifetime blah blah..'

k...it takes me one 2 second google search to find its a hoax which I pretty much guessed anyway.

Question: Do you email back and tell her it's a hoax or not?

I hate getting chain emails and spam. It's worse when there is not even a Hey Laura hows it going type thing.

k...I guess this was a tiny bit of a rant.

But seriously, what do you do when you get these hoax emails? Usually, I just delete but this one tells people to stay up til 12:30 am to see it and I feel like it would be the nice thing to do to tell her not to bother.

I have a friend that does the same and have told him not to send me that stuff, but I still get it and unless I block him or start marking it as spam, he'll keep sending it. :mad

If chain mail spam and hoax, then its likely all she did to try and keep the chain going is to add the whole of her address book to the recipients box when forwarding.

Bin it and move on, likely if she has not contacted you till now and with junk, she will not reply if you tell her its junk, but on the other hand it may if you want it to, rebuild a friendship as we all loose contact with old friends at times, so sometimes this is all it needs to rebuild.... BUT thats only if you want to.

    Me I'd likely delete it,

Yeah.... hard to say whether or not anyone actually believes it. I assume every one is a hoax. Can't count the number of times my friends have told me:

OHMIGOD!! They're shutting down hotmail (unless you drink the Kool-Aid)

Haha muskie....I mark my aunt as spam. I felt guilty for all of 10 seconds. LOL But jeez...she sends that dumb spam mail to every single darn person in her addy book!

Yeah...I usually delete too, halo. But she is sort of one of those sweet people who probably really believes it and mentioned getting practice with her camera to take pics. I was just put off with no personal note or anything. I can't stand that.

Well if a nice person and if the hoax may do her harm, and if the hoax mentions to send pics of her to a web address then I would contact her, but maybe just send a link to the hoax if its on Snopes to her, with just a quick...

Hi, Do you know this is a hoax <enter web address of the hoax here>

and leave it at that, if she wants a friendly convo then she will reply, at least you warned her.

I would most likely turn it around and contact my friend with ; how are you, long time no hear from etc, and just at the end of the email mention that you have been getting strange emails asking then politely if they are aware of them??
    Be tactful, but polite.
They may not be aware of anything untoward! :)

Personally, I point out the error, especially when it is virus hoaxes and stuff. Used to get tons of those when I had a myspace account. But then, there is sweet pleasure in leaving people in their gullibility LOL

I did just that Grumbles. :) I felt bad because she is a very sweet person and isn't one of those people you get those emails from a lot that you just want to put a block on their email addy. After my initial annoyance because people are so gullible about emails and if it comes to them, it must be true outlook, I figured it was the nice thing to do only because knowing her, she'd mark it on her calendar and be up all night waiting for the stupid thing to happen.

Anyway, no sooner do I email her than literally a minute later I get another email from my OTHER college roommate in a 'reply to all' email saying she'd be sure to watch it!' roflmao Jeez...don't people check things out??

I do, too. Although sometimes when you do it on forums people get their knickers in a twist about it. ;)

I figure someone who hasn't been around long enough to recognize hoaxes/spam when they see it should be shown the light for the betterment of everyone they know.

Glad I didnt go to your college ;)

If you ever see 2 moons in the sky

    You are either very drunk
    or
One of them is a very large meteor or asteroid, and you may want to duck.

For me it depends on what the hoax is, virus warnings and stuff like that i reply and say hey this isn't true. Other then that just delete em i say.

I'd reply with a link to Snopes stating it's not true and then ask the usual greeting friendly questions. Like "how are you? I haven't heard from you in like x year..." etc.

My sister used to send me these chain emails, reply to 20 people in the next 24 hours blah blah. I just sent it back to her 20 times :)

I'd delete it, and fire off a message to the sender that it is a hoax, and ask him/her to please not send such junk to me in the future. If they continue to send the junk, then that indicates they are not a friend at all, and I'd take appropriate steps and flag them.

    @shanemail

I saw two moons in the sky one night! - but it was a friend of mine and her gal-pal mooning us off the balcony of her apartment . . .:D
    . . . and yes, there was a vast quantity of alcohol involved . . . :drink

25 years ago and I'm STILL recovering from the hangover . . . rolleyes

lol...there was no question of me breaking it. Not once in my life have I forwarded a chain email. If I get a really really good joke, I'll send that to a few people, but that's it.

roflmao I'm beginning to wonder now that my second roommate emailed saying she'd watch it.

Ah well. I did email her and sent the snopes link that it was a hoax. I even sent her a nice how are you all doing note...haven't heard back. rolleyes
