Hello there. A friend says she's been experiencing slow and freezing IE lately, so I thought I'd take a look for her. I figured it was probably some kind of malware, so I first ran CCleaner and then went through all the other steps in your READ AND RUN ME FIRST thread. The logs are attached. I was surprised that none of the programs appears to have found anything at all. But then, personally, I'm not noticing any problems with the computer performance.

The only thing that's happening is on start-up, it runs C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe, and that window shows Unable to open SCSI controller 1:[\], error code: 0x2. Then a separate window comes up with Windows cannot find C:\Program "Files\WiseFixer\WiseFixer.exe." I don't see that program in Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks for taking a look at these logs and letting me know what you think.

Since you are running Norton Security Suite, I suggest you uninstall Constant Guard Protection Suite.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Program Files\WiseFixer

    Otherwise, your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for this info. The steps for removing WiseFixer did work, and I have no more errors.

One more thing I just noticed which is odd: When I try to type numbers from the keyboard, *in IE only*, it types letters instead -- random letters that don't correspond to the key at all (even the fn secondary option for the number key). It only happens in IE, not for instance if I type the numbers in a notepad. This is a Gateway 10" inch, so the keys I'm using are the ones above the letters; there is no keypad. I Googled this for possible fixes, and nothing I tried works -- from uninstalling the keyboard device to checking the Language settings (which are correct) to toggling the fn on the number keys. Do you have any ideas? I've never seen this before, especially with respect to the fact that it only occurs when using IE. (It came to my attention when I tried to login to your site, and I kept getting a failed password. So I tested the password in the UID field, IE address field, and Google Search field, which is when I realized that it was typing letters vs. numbers. I eventually had to login to your site on a separate PC and transfer your .reg text onto a flash drive to install on the laptop.) Thanks again.

I am not familiar with that circumstance. Perhaps you should post in the software ( or maybe hardware ) forum for additional assistance with that issue. Out of curiosity, can you type it correctly to note pad and copy and paste it into IE?

Hi there. Thanks for responding. Thought I'd update you on the results of my odyssey as I tracked down the resolution to this issue. Come to find out, the problem is a program called GuardedID that is installed on the computer when you download the free Norton A/V that comes from Comcast (which also comes with Constant Guard). When I uninstalled just the GuardedID, the keyboard numbers starting working correctly again in IE. Glad to know that we have no malware issues, so we're back in business. Best wishes!
