Hi all -first post, so please be gentle.. :)

I'm an unfortunate owner and operator of a DSL-300t modem with a DI-604 router & 4port switch sat behind it.

This weeks problem seems to be that the 300t modem will freeze up on a near daily basis. It's got the latest uk firmware (18/06/2004) and when it works, it works well enough, but not for more than a day (ish) at a stretch. At this point internet access disappears - you can't even access it's web interface and you've got to power-cycle the thing to get going again, which is a royal PITA..

Network traffic is variable, several boxes, there's often torrents running, SSH sessions, web and music - we're getting the most from our 2mb line :) - could this be part of the problem?

Anyone got any thoughts or opinions? Cheers in advance..

    Reckon I got it sussed.

It appears to be a fairly common gripe with the 300t, and is documented here n there, but mostly here:

    http://www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp?code=110630&thread=7

In a nutshell it's the connection table - it's far too small for peer-to-peer stuff like bittorrent. What I did in the end was telnet into it, and set the connection table size to the max, with this line:

    echo "32752" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max

And now it's been up nearly 24hours, with 2 torrents running, without skipping a beat (touches wood).

    Just thought I'd share..

There are thousands of people that are using this product with No problem.

There is always the possibility that your specific unit is at fault.

However, if you want to move a tone of sand you do not use a "VW Beatle" you buy a truck.

In the world of Network Traffic, this

Network traffic is variable, several boxes, there's often torrents running, SSH sessions, web and music - we're getting the most from our 2mb line - could this be part of the problem?

Needs a truck, switch Off the BT and it probably would work well.

If you need ti use BT for scientific research talk you your Lab (School, etc.), they might offer a solution.

If you are using BT for what most people use it for, you should not do it to begin with.

I was unaware that network hardware was graded as per it's ability to handle network traffic. Nowhere on the description or documentation does it say that the 300t is unsuitable for heavy traffic - thus why should I think it won't cope?

Besides, the problem seems to be sorted. Thanks for your input though, next time I'll look into buying a truck. :) -Any reccomendations?

I assume that you know what is the make of a “Real Game Rig” you know 3GB dual core CPU with $600 SLI Video, $200 PSU etc. Total cost might be $1500.

Well the Routers are actually small computers, many are based on the old 486 CPU (that is before the Pentium era) with few MB of RAM and an embedded OS (usually subset of Linux, or propriety).

So the same thing that would happen to an old computer with 4MB Video under heavy Graphic Gaming is happening to your poor Router. The 486 and 4MB memory get a lot of GIGO under too much traffic and get bogs down.

You want better like a “Game Rig” get Cisco Professional Router (it also would cost similarly).

Why the logic goes $1000 for a “Game Rig” is OK, but No more than $50 for a Heavy duty Router? I do not know bits me!

    :)
