Yes, I noticed a slight slowdown after installing SP2.

I posted about it on this site and didnt really get a clear explanation. Before SP2 I was downloading consistently at around 1.2 Mbps, now I get anywhere from about 35 Kbps to 500 Kbps but rarely go over 1000 Kbps now.

Other than that, the effect was pretty slight. Things ran slower, but barely noticeable. Maybe this can be attributed to the windows security center always running now with SP2.

    What specifically have you noticed?

Also, To anyone out there still using SP1 (I know a few of you do from sigs) why are you using SP1 and not SP2 given the lack of security in SP1?

I'm running SP2. I download at 1.2 megabytes per second no problem, if the server supports it. Yes, megabytes. :)

well, I know mine could only have been the driver issue, as it was during a reinstall of windows on a fresh hard drive on my current system. So hard drive, ram, spyware, and virus would not have been the cause.

Sounds like microsoft just basically listed a lot of other things that could make a computer run slow, and is telling you it must be one of these things and not SP2, **even though since they have that in thier FAQ, a lot of people must have had the same issue after installing SP2. ** You think they all just all-of-a-sudden got spyware/virus or crappy hardware?

OTOH, is it just pure luck that every machine I have installed SP2 on has run great?

No problems here. Machine slowdown is usually caused by a third party problem, then a service pack.

I think you have no real evidence to back that up :)

If you have issues, how about posting them so someone can help you?

programs go slow...internet goes slow...sometimes its like i dont even have cable/dsl....and i think its because of SP2..and not spyware..

I've installed SP2 on over 70 machines to date any only one had a problem and it was with an HP printer software suite which was remedied with an update to that software.

Other than that, I've had no problems what-so-ever. so yeah.. give us some background on why you think it's trash..

Which programs? Define slow. Have you checked for application updates?

How many things do you have loading at startup? What firewall and version are you using?

I am using Cox, and don't have these problems.

What browser are you using? What do bandwidth tests show?

I download at 1.2Mbps, and the forum loads like its locally on my hard drive.

I was just saying that based on my experience (which I have already posted about here) seems to be a common occurance, as microsoft has a FAQ guide to diagnose the problem.

It just bugs me that the problems/solutions they post have nothing to do actually having SP2 or not, but rather having spyware or not, or having enough ram or not, or virus or whatever. How many people consider that they have a slow computer, and automatically assume its SP2 without first scanning for virus/spyware.

If the slowdown happens directly after the install of SP2 (as it did for me), where would you think the problem is?

I have respect for your opinion, but I was a Microsoft tech, and I worked and was trained on Sp2 issues before you even got to put the rtm on your machine :)

To date, not one problem I worked on pertaining to performance problems after installing SP2 ever resulted in it being the fault of SP2. I was always able to find the culprit, and it was never MS.

Luck? Maybe. I wager I worked on well over 200 cases on the same complaint. It wasn't always the same culprit, but the culprit was never Sp2.

So we both have our opinions, I guess. I remain optimistic, that if one investigates it throughly, they will find the cause to not be a service pack.

Primary causes for problems after SP2 update (IME):

    1. Outdated/incompatible drivers.
    2. Outdated/incompatible software, that doesn't support SP2.
    3. Spyware/Malware.
    4. Machines with problems already, prior to updating to SP2.

Not much to say other then, yea i used sp2 on all the machines i see, and like Adrynalyne said, any problems i have found with it have been attributed to third party software, or drivers needing updated to work better with sp2. Also keep your windows updates as recently there was a patch to the way it handles duel processors, might help if appicable to your situtation?

The only thing that's slowed down for me is perhaps 2 xtra seconds to boot up. With SP1, I got two scrolling bars and with SP2, I get 4 scrolling bars. Big deal. Works great and I like the xtra security.

i machine ran fine..i installed SP2..restarted my computer then wam..internet is very slow

could it be that i have sp1 and sp2 files installed to my hard drive making it slow? or does SP2 just overwrite sp1?

SP2 is all inclusive, although your lack of willingness to divulge information as to what programs have problems etc. leads me to believe this is trolling. I've asked far too many questions that have gone unanswered for me to believe this is anything different.

Yes SP2 updates the components of SP1.

have you checked on updated drivers and software?

What security software do you have installed as in AV, Spyware etc and are they fully upto date?

Once SP2 was installed did you also goto Windows Update and get all the latest updates?

Which Browser are you using if IE have you tried Opera or Firefox and see if the internet browsing is still slow?

Nobody knows "all about computers". We all learn everyday, no matter how good we think we are.

I've installed SP2 on over a dozen PC's, and never had a problem.

And one of those was a crappy Pentium III!

It's all down to how you look after your machine.
