Does Storing Files On The Desktop Slow Down A Pc

When I create a new file on my computer I'm not always sure in whcih folder I need to store it or whether I need to create a new folder. Until I decide I will store the file on my Desktop. Likewise, if I'm updating Firefox I export Bookmarks to the Desktop and keep the file there until I'm happy it can be deleted. However, someone has informed me that saving things on the Desktop slows down the computer. What they couldn't do is explain why.

My principal question is this: Does storing files on your PC's desktop slow down your PC?

If the answer to my previous question is in the affirmative, I have a secondary question but seek only a concise answer. Why does storing files on the Desktop slow a computer down?

 

I'm sorry I can't help you out, but I want to share my experiences with the desktop: I, too, sometimes put a lot of stuff on the desktop and to the point that the desktop is cluttered. I sometimes create a folder on the desktop and move some of the items there. I also use FSL Launcher and move some icons there. I learned this approach from an old Win98SE system which does that when cleaning up the desktop.
