Yikes! This excerpt from your link sums it up:

After Sydney's water problem years ago, I've continued drinking bottled water, even though our water here is pretty good now. So reading that article gave me the shivers, and am passing that link onto my American mates.

I heard not long ago that infertility in men was attributed to hormones in birth control pills that could not be filtered out of water, this goes far beyond that. I'm ashamed to say I used to dispose of out of date medications down the toilet. They now tell you to crush them and put the in the trash, kinda sounds as bad huh? Could leach into underground water maybe.

From Government down to environmentalist and the Waterboard here, everyone disapproves of people putting anything down toilets/sinks - hence recycling and proper disposal of everything.

As for medications, rather than dumping down sinks/toilets or throwing in the bin, here we're told to hand these over to pharmacies for them to dispose of properly - which makes a lot of sense and simple to do.
