i had a problem with my computer for about a month, allowing me to only work in safe mode, my previous thoughts were missing folders and i had to find my restore disk (which i couldnt) and one day when i had to install a printer and couldnt in safe mode becuase of the printer spool, i looked up some threads went went into the services of my computer, found out that i couldnt run printspool from safe mode, then i found all the symatec services. i disabled all of them, then, all of a sudden, normal xp mode works for me! and now i get this message saying "norton AV cannot protect your computer because it has expired"! i had to work in safe mode for a month, all because norton internet security expired!!

    Welcome to MG. :)
As MA says, problems with Norton :p are old news to us here on MG.

I suggest you go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 for lots of great free stuff, and alternatives (free) to Norton. I use Zone Alarm free ( for firewall) and Avast ( for a free anti virus program).

Beware, MG is addictive, and should come with a warning. :D Bazza

Sadly a fact of the paid for retail applications is they run out at some point which is why many on this website and many other tech websites use the FREE applications that do the same job and in most cases better than their paid for equivelent.

We on Majorgeeks have because of this produced a great listing of free software for various jobs http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20

    McAfee is almost as bad.

Apparently, the latest version requires your modem to be on when you boot up so it can connect to the mother ship to validate your copy, otherwise it disables your antivirus.

I'm all for anti piracy, but they can't be serious.

I read this in a magazine, so I'm hoping it's not true.

If it is, it almost makes Norton look decent. :)

They don't need antivirus, it would take too long to download a virus. :D

Agree FULLY on Norton and McAfee. I, however, like my PC-cilin Internet Security (anti-virus/firewall) at 25.00 p/y after first yr. But AVG is what I use on all other computers Will have to try AVAST so I can have a comparision. Qball, these guys/gals on here know what they are talking about if you haven't guessed before now.

I switched from norton two years ago to Avast, still happy, and so are my pals
Tried mcaffee once too..um way back. After uninstalling it i couldnt boot because it overwrote stuff, and I ended up formatting my drive because of it. wine wine...
    any cheeze?

I am a fan of AVG & Zonealarm free stuff!!

Norton is too much of a system hog and for some reason McAfee turned me off from the get go!!

However...I just read in my Maximum PC magazine that they are really liking the free Comodo firewall, so I'm doing some serious pondering on checking it out...anyone else got any input on Comodo!?!?

Norton is very clever though the way it snares it's customers.

It's bundled with just about every OEM computer sold, and usually with 3 months of free updates, then it has to be renewed.

Most people would just automatically do so, which means Norton have another customer.

The cynic in me would say that's why it's so hard to uninstall. :)
