Must have some type of malware - constant pop ups to re-direct me, taking over home page, etc. I have tried to do go through all the steps in the malware removal guide, but couldn't do 6A - on-line scanning. I think that might be because I couldn't uninstall Java to re-install the latest version - I couldn't uninstall because my "add/remove programs" function is also not working. ARGH.

Anyway, I have attached what logs I did get. I am NOT very computer literate, so if any of you nice folks are kind enough to reply, please keep this mind.

    Thanks in advance SO MUCH!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to start by observing the directions in step 3 of the READ ME. You have AVG7 and McAfee installed. You must uninstall one of these now before doing anything else. Also because you have McAfee installed and you have Sygate firewall installed, you have two firewalls. This is you keep McAfee, you must uninstall Sygate now.

Then you need to uninstall the below:
    Spyware Begone V9.15-Free
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

After complete my instructions from message # 3, continue with the below.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now!

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvX.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {ABCDECF0-4B15-11D1-ABED-709549C10000} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvX.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvX.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Begone] "C:\spywarebegone\SpywareBeGone.exe" -FastScan
    O4 - Startup: TA_Start.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Beth Wimpy\Local Settings\Temp\TICHD003.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
    O7 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum.txt
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: MAPfrm - MAPfrm.dll (file missing)

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thank you for the reply.

I am unable to follow your uninstall instructions. As noted in the first post, the install/uninstall feature is disabled. It says, "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." (BTW, when I was in safe mode, I signed on as the administrator and rec'd the same message.)

Any suggestions on how to remove programs without this function?

I was able to remove the AV67 with the install file (uninstall is an option). Other than that, no luck.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

    You mean AVG7 I assume?

Just continue with all other steps and let me know if you have any other problems.

You absolutely rock. Everything seems to be going well. I am attaching the requested logs, although I don't have a HJT log - I chose the "system scan" and not the "system scan & log" option.

After I press send, I will follow up with the disable and enable system restore process.

If you see anything else problematic in my logs, please let me know. Otherwise, a huge THANKS!

You need to run it again and get a new log and attach it.

You did not uninstall CounterSpy as requested. You need to uninstall this trial now. The previous fix already delete some folders from CounterSpy. These were included in the Avenger fix because I expected you to uninstall CounterSpy where requested. Did you have a problem uninstalling it?

Now retry what was requested in message # 3. If you can now uninstall those items, attach a new log from ShowNew.

AAARRGH! I did not uninstall CounterSpy at that point (and I did try) because my "install/remove programs" was still disabled and there was nowhere in the software to do so.

Anyway, here is the new hi-jack file.

    Thanks many!

Oops. Just saw the red text about the installing in #3.

    Spyware Begone V9.15-Free
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation)

Since I installed the Sun Java Runtime Environment on top of items 2&3 above, is it still save to remove those now?
    Thanks!!

Yes but did you just say that you still cannot uninstall things including CounterSpy?

  12. beth01dfw

    beth01dfw Private E-2

yes/no. I can uninstall things now. But Counter Spy is not on the list.
Also - the shortcut for Counter Spy is still on my desktop, but Windows cannot locate it. I believe the maintenance that was run deleted just parts of it.

Did you uninstall the items from message # 3? If so attach a new log from ShowNew. If not, uninstall them and then attach a new log from ShowNew.

Hi again. I have partial results in uninstalling:

Spyware Begone V9.15-Free: NO: "Could not load initialization file"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3: YES
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03: YES
LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation): ?Couldn't locate; may have already uninstalled?

    Attached is new ShowNew log.

    Thanks many!

Sunbelt CounterSpy is still there too. Are you sure it is not in Add/Remove programs.

Counter Spy was still there. (It wasn't removed in previous steps because I didn't have add/remove available at that time). Now it is removed.

I reran the show new and also the getunkey.

    Thanks...

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
