  1. Ok i'm sure i'm about to get hammered for a newb or resolved thread... but i looked... I faq'd... and i quite frankly am NOT computer savvy and will need some babysitting... Apologies in advance ;)

I know you guys have dealt with similar issues before but I am currently on my work computer and not immediately able to resolve my issue. My question is this...

In addition to the typical logs and etcetera i will need to post, this browser hijacker is a .exe or .dll which is really getting on my nerves... and i don't quite understand how to remove it. It brings up icons on the taskbar (bottom right) including WARNING's about the security of my computer, constantly bringing up new "Issue's" that they claim can be resolved by the affiliates they link. I am pulling my hair out here (the little i have) Is there anyway without digging to deep to fix this?

Your help is appreciated in advance, and YES i read the FAQ so trust me (to the extent of my abilities) I will be following the directions you lay out... but as is the norm I am more worried about my Inability to properly troubleshoot my Computer and the Damage the Hijacker is doing (security of my passwords and credit info) as well as the damage i can do to my own computer. I am currently running Adaware (the freeware version) along with Norton Anti-Virus. I also used the free Microsoft scan of my computer which identified one malicious file and claims it took care of it. Each time I perform a full System Scan it reports a handful of corrupted files... I quarantine and delete them but they're constantly back, and the hijacker is not thrown off.

Sorry to hit you with the wall of text, let me know if I missed anything and if i should have logs prepared for y'all... Thanks Again

    Hi and Welcome

Hey nowt to be sorry about on the wall of text, you have described your issue fairly, well and alot better than a one line "here's my Hijackthis log" which tells us nothing... so no need to be sorry at all :)

First off and you may well have not clicked any of those popups yet, but DONT click any at all, if you have its not a problem as we shoudl be able to get you fixed up.

OK lets start off by.. if you have any important documents and files, pictures etc on your PC a wise thing is to back them up to CD, DVD etc, either use your CD burning software to do this or use Microsofts Backup Util if available ( its located in Programs > Assessories > Tools if I remember correctly, only reason I cannot remember is I moved mine )

Once done print out the guide as it maybe easier to follow on paper as you can tick off each step you complete, just take your time as there is no need to rush, but the steps in the guide have been sucessfully run by many many users who are not computer savvy, they were designed that way, but if you get stuck, post again in this your thread and we will endevour to guide you through it.

once completed then attach all the logs, the malware may still be present, so dont worry as the logs will tell our experts in this field, what malware you haev, they will then post some instructions for you to follwo to remove the malware and its components.

This is the steps we need you to follow and logs to post..........

    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

  3. you coulda warned me bitdefender would take up my evening :p
