I was doing some research on web accelerators and came across this company <http://www.digitalrobotics.com/> who do a few shareware thing so I thought I would download and try their "Speed Freak" shareware.

When you install it, it wants an email address, not an unreasonable request I thought but nevertheless I put in one of my Yahoo throwaway addresses. The software then installs.

What you don't know is that it has just highjacked your Outlook Express address book and then spams everyone in it with this crap!!!!!!

"If you want to seriously improve your internet speed or absolutely end spam you need to try the programs listed below.

I have authorized this recommendation to be sent to you because these products work. Don't worry, you are not on some list, this is a recommendation I have sent.

I strongly suggest that you give SPEED FREAK a try whether you have a dial up or a cable connection. This is not another bogus accelerator, SPEED FREAK really works.

Also, if you are interested in stopping all spam mail give Spam Freak a try. It will absolutely stop all spam before it gets to your in box and it allows you to eliminate all unknown viruses before they have a chance to make you a victim!

It costs nothing to download either of these programs and see for yourself that they really do work!"

The bloody cheek of these bastards! They even do a Spam Blocker!!

I would suggest that you give these people a wide berth

The moral of the story might be:
Do not to use Outlook. MS likes this sort of thing. They have repeatedly refused to make sending email by scripting a choice. There are other email readers/contact managers but they all have some problems. Maybe if enough of us scream long enough at MS they will get better.

Is that like the same people that can block all spam from any email account that send you the spam to begin with? I've often wondered if they would allow or block thier messages.

in my experience web excelerators are all loaded with spyware and other junk unless you are paying a monthly fee, and if thats the case why not jump up to broadband of some sort

No it didn't work, it was useless, and I wouldn't be trying a web accelerator if I could "jump to broadband"

*wanders off mumbling, I can feel a rant coming on*

Well Scousetechie, you didn't mention your current speed. I'll assume you're way below 45 KB/s which is about the max most places.

First thing to check is your phoneline, if you have static when you're talking, that will really slow things down as packets have to be resent. Also, you can have your phone company check their lines for problems.

There's a pay for company that stores your frequently visited pages and sends you only the difference. As for accelerators, I've never had any luck with them.

Well I sorted out the speed problem.....Junked IE6 in favour of Mozilla Firebird, what a great browser!! I am truly impressed with the way it works and I love the way you can open a web page in a separate tab, and it is much faster than IE6.

Next I'm going to try their email client Thunderbird.

i was thinking of giving firebird a try as a second browser, i use IE and opera now, but opera crashes alot. anyone esle had any expeirience with firebird, or recomend another good browser? i like the tabbed browsing that opera has also and the fact that you can save sesions, does firebird have the ability to save sesions?

I'm using Firebird right now. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I've even used IE at the same time and still had no problems with it. Yes, you can save sessions with it, but don't make me lie to you and tell you that I have :)

I can recommend Firebird. I just loaded Thunderbird (the email client) tonight and, while it's good it still needs a few things doing to it to make it better than OE or Pegasus (which I use in work) maybe when V4 is released I'll try it again.

Overall though, you have to respect those guys at Mozilla for what they are doing
