I am having several problems with a Lenovo T61 thinkpad running win7. After a windows update approx 1 month ago, I get multicolored vertical lines at normal bootup. When booting into safe mode, I get 2 screens displaying the same desktop. system restore says there are no restore points to access. I suspect some sort of malware. See attached log files.

Please make sure you follow instruction in normal boot mode not safe mode like your previous logs.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below programs:
    Ask Toolbar
    BrowserProtect
    DefaultTab
    Delta Chrome Toolbar
    Delta toolbar
    DnsBasic 1.0 build 111
    File Type Assistant
    getsav-in
    Iminent
    InternetHelper3 Chrome Toolbar
    Java 7 Update 17
    KeyBar 1.6 Toolbar
    PC Fix Speed 1.2.0.24
    Search Protect by conduit
    Solid Savings
    SpeedUpMyPC
    Vafmusic Toolbar

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I'm not able to start the pc in normal boot mode. The entire screen is vertical lines. there is nothing legible.

Okay then run all the steps in safe boot mode, but at the end try to run the GetLogs.bat program from MGtools in normal boot mode if you can. If not then also run it in safe mode. While we are removing a bunch of junkware, I'm not sure that your problems are due to this.

I removed all programs but was not able to install Java in safe mode. still unable to boot in normal mode. There was no movedfile log that I could find. I have attached mgtools log and JRT.txt generated by the junkware removal tool. No improvement.

    Thank you

I still see Iminent. KeyBar 1.6 Toolbar, and Vafmusic Toolbar in your new log. Are you sure that you uninstalled these? Please try again and tell me what happens for each.

Okay MGtools really did not either because the logs are incomplete. And also because your problems do not appear to be malware related, I'm going to try something a few other steps before sending you to the Hardware Forum for a possible graphics card or driver issue. We will be removing your protection software too because you have too many antivirus and antimalware protection programs installed.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now uninstall the below programs so that we can make sure they are not getting in our way and to also be sure that they are also not some how the cause of your problems. If anything does not uninstall or you do not see it, just continue on and tell me later. I added a few more junkware items to the list.

    Advanced SystemCare 6
    AVG 2013
    AVG PC Tuneup 2011
    AVG SafeGuard toolbar
    AVG Security Toolbar
    LessTabs

Also run the below to be sure that AVG is removed:

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Sorry for the delay. very busy weekend. I seem to have a conflict with our course of action. I received a notification email in my MS outlook inbox that includes an additional procedure of merging a fixme.reg file with my registry.
After reading the original response on the Major Geeks site, it does not include this step. The registry keys for the fixme.reg file seem to correspond to items that we have deleted. Should I include this step before running the OTM procedure?

Only work on what you see in the forum not emails. Emails get sent out anytime we put a new message in a thread but they do not get updated by another email if we edit a message. So the only thing that you can trust as being current is the actual messages in the forum. Also emails can typically lose the formatting and structure of what is in the forum.

So to repeat, ignore what is in emails other than using it as a notification that something was added to your thread. ;)

I did not see iminent in the installed programs list. KeyBar 1.6 Toolbar, and Vafmusic Toolbar have been uninstalled. I am still having the same issues with the graphics. No change so far.

Okay we have remove all the junkware issues from your PC and as I suspected, none of these have anything to do with your graphics problems. They do not appear to be related to any malware at all. Seems you either have graphics card problems or drivers for the graphics card problems. I suggest posting in the Hardware Forum. But first you may want try reinstalling the drivers for your graphics card to see if that helps.
