I have used auda city to copy music and save them to my hard drive. They have deleted the version that I have used for a long time. I am not sure the will be able to get it to work for my computer.

Is there another program that is similar ?

    Hi Java...

Are you talking about Audacity? That's a sound editor.

Where are you looking to download music from?

Your question is a little vague.
The latest version of Audacity is for Windows XP, Vista, 7 & 8, 32-bit & 64-bit.

    Audacity 2.0.3/4/5/6 run in Windows 8 64-bit.
The link provided by plodr list all 4 versions. In the left pane, click Windows 8 x64 (4) and download the 1 you need.

    I don't run Windows 8.1

I have Audacity installed on exactly one computer. (We have 8 currently in the house).
version 2.0.3 was installed on XP in 2013. It was the current version when I installed it. I used it to record old tapes I had to the computer so I could recycle the tapes. I haven't used it since.

Eldon, I meant to say that I downloaded 4 different versions of audacity and they did not work. When I last posted on audacity, that stated the old versions had been removed.
It is apparent to me that they did not create a version for window 8.1.

I down loaded the free recorders listed, now to figure how play music and convert to wave and export to my hard drive.

Will keep you posted on my adventure.

    Thanks

    That is not true.
    Audacity works on 8.1.

Why use an old version when the wiki says use the latest version?
    Latest version is 2.1.0

If you just need an audio recorder, Free Sound Recorder is the way to go. The settings are straightforward. Any problems, post them.

FYI Free Sound Recorder is/was also known as Free Online Radio Player Recorder. The name says it all.

Attn. Plodr - Thanks for your information. There is support as you say, however, the worked with me for a while, do this do that. In the end result they told me to go to a site called Dummies for etc. To me that is telling me they can't get audacity to work for me.

If it would be allowed I would copy it and post here, but I am not going to cause problems. Still I thank you and Eldon you have tried to help me.
    Thanks

    Java,
Can you tell us exactly what problem(s) you are having with Audacity?
(Take your time and elaborate. I'll be back in less than an hour.)

    To Eldon and Plodr

I decide to keep working on Audacity. Yesterday after reading and a few comments from the moderator, I figured out how to get the Audacity recording to work, and it did.

My thanks go out to you two for your assistance. I don't give up to soon. I am going to keep the free sound recording Eldon, I just have to figure out how to record and save to my hard drive. Again many thanks:

    To Eldon:
First I will to you is that when I started with you on my quest, you told me that stereo was important.

On the site there are four boxes when I finally looked on their manual I found that I need to have stereo in the system to get my recording sound in the proper place.
I made sure that I had in my Realtek stereo enabled. When I got that set up this is what was in the 4 boxes:

    Box 1 MME
    Box 2 Stereo Mix (1)
    Box 3 2 Stereo
    Box 4 Speakers

I found that the key to this whole situation was having the stereo in the boxes and make sure the speakers where enabled.
It seemed that when I got everything enabled all the above appeared in the boxes.
To me the key was "Stereo".

Hope this makes some sense to you Eldon because you sure responded to me
If there is anything else on something doesn't make sense to you I will respond,

    Again thanks

Well now you have 2 recorders. If the one fails (for whatever reason), you can always use the other.

FYI While stereo is important, Stereo Mix is something else. Basically, it's a feature that allows you to record any sound your PC plays.

TIP If you have a MP3 Player that doesn't play OGG or FLAC audio files (some do, some don't), you can play those files in Winamp, record them in Audacity and save them as MP3 files.

And now you can teach the youngsters a thing or two about audio recording on a PC. ;)
