Sorry, having (yet another) "mental block" here ...

On this PC (XP/SP3), downloads in the Limited User Account come through Firefox (2.0.0.18), but in the Admin UA, downloads come via IE. I would (very much) prefer the downloads in Admin to come by way of FF.

What am I missing here? I looked into FF Tools, but can not seem to figure it out. I've wanted to address this for a long time, and finally, tonight, a download failure of Sun Java has promoted me to deal with it (though I'm not certain that the "1791 Error" I received is due to my query here regarding downloads?).

I know there's a simple fix (answer) to this - but it's beyond me ...

Thanks in advance (and as always),
    g ...

    • Select "Tools | Options" from the main menu in Firefox.
    • Change to the "Advanced" tab/section.
    • Under System Defaults, check the "Firefox should check to see if it is the default browser when starting" option.
    • Click "OK".
    • Close all Firefox windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Firefox.
    • When the "Would you like to make [Firefox] your default browser?" prompt appears, click "Yes" to make Firefox the default browser.

Well Lev, thank you for the reply, and I started to post back, and mention that I'd already 'checked that and tried that', but I went ahead and checked it and tried it again anyway (complete with the restart) - to no avail.

Perhaps it's a setting in my IE7 browser (in Admin) that's preventing it (?), though for the life of me, I looked there too, and don't see what it could be?

PS - Oops, actually, I just re-read your post, and I do not see "System Defaults" under the Advanced Tab - nor anywhere else (?).

This is what your looking for if I am reading you right?? (want to make FF the default browser?)

Then make sure the box is unchecked in IE. because you may hit 'OK' when it keeps asking you, undoing you changes you just did to firefox.

Well thank you also for the reply, and though I can't really see your screenshots very well, all the things you have mentioned have been done.

I think it has to do with a setting in "Folder Options" (File Types/Extensions Tab?)? But there are so many possibilities in the Folder Options that I am not sure which one might address/correct the problem that I'm having, and shudder to think I'll select the wrong setting and screw something up.

Both browsers are "set" as you and Lev have instructed. FF is my default browser, and I don't have any issues with IE (such as asking me to make it the default browser, etc.).

The problem that I'm having is: in Admin, when I download something (anything, from the internet), the Microsoft (IE7?) box appears which says & asks:

    Open File - Security Warning

Do you want to run this file?

    Run - Cancel (<buttons)

Always ask before opening this file (<checkbox)

But this is the case only in the Admin User Account. In the other ("Limited") UA I get the Firefox Dialog box when I wish to download something, but of course, cannot successfully download anything in that UA because it is Limited?

Has it ever worked as you are wanting it to (and as mine certainly does)? If so, use a system restore point back to a date you know it worked, as it sounds like you have tweaked a setting you did not want to tweak. We could spend a very long time trying to work out which one ;)

Ok, thanks again, but a restore won't work (the issue is long standing, I've simply dealt with it, but need to ... would very much like to - change it).

Let me ask this, based-on your knowledge/experience: is a download considered an "Internet Shortcut"? If that's the case, it appears to me that I can (?) in fact address this issue in Folder Options>File Types> ...... "Advanced Tab" ... maybe?

See what the settings are in the limited UA and mirror them.

I've got the settings as attached in the pics below. Never had a problem in downloading in FF. Note that I'm using XP. See it that helps you.

Thanks oma, but again, mine is set as yours is (except for a different homepage).

Perhaps I should explain what prompted me to start this thread - maybe that will help clear this up.

I went to try and Update Sun Java, I, as is usually the case now, had to do it through admin. Admin, as I've been trying to explain throughout this thread, currently only does downloads through IE (again, as opposed to my Limited User Account, which does them through Firefox).

Upon downloading the Sun Java Update through IE, I received a "1791" Error, which now that I think about it, probably has nothing to do with IE - so, I am back to square one - and still stuck ...

Excellent question, and I owe everyone an apology.

It is not, in fact, when I download directly from the site (via FF) that I am getting the MS Windows box. It is when I attempt to right-click and Open icons off of the desktop (saved downloads) that it shows me an MS Windows box. That, is what I am trying to "get around" (overcome/change/defeat), I suppose.

I have become EXTREMELY confused, flipping back and forth between accessing the internet only via the Limited UA (for "safety/security - correct?), and the Administrator UA trying to "Administer" this PC (downloads/installs, etc., etc).

I have been mistaken throughout this thread, and again, I apologize for the confusion I brought, and I appreciate all the effort put forth by the members here.
