Download Performance Reduction Problem

    Dear MajorGeeks Malware Forum:

    I have followed the procedure in "READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support" (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407), and still my problem persists, and so I hope that you can support me.

    I am having consistent and reproducable reduction of download speed from the internet, which works for a 20-30 second cycle at 80-100 kpbs, and then 30-40 seconds of 0.00 kpbs, and then it returns and drops out again, consistenly without exception.

    I have uploaded the logs of the scans.

    I hope that one of you can help me.

    Hello Malware specialists:

    I tried to follow the upload log/txt file procedure, but I kept getting unexplainable errors. Here are my logs for the scans which I performed.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    You problmes with download speed may be a physical hardware problem and not malware. I assume you are on an analog modem dial-up connection?



    Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O1 - Hosts: 169.254.110.168 HP000D9D0F6EA8
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
    Now attach a new HJT log. And let me know if there is any change in your problem. I doubt the above has anything to do with it.

    Hi Chaslang:

    I am not regularly home as I travel frequently, and so I appologize for the delay in responding to you. I use an ADSL modem, which reguarly allows me to download 141 kpbs. I have now checked my TCP/IP activity with the netstat command, and performed a trace route. This allows me to monitor the traffic, but I have not been able to identify the source of the problem on this PC.

    I tried the things which you proposed, and you are right, they do not resolve the problem. Here is the latest HJT Log. I hope that you can help.

    Well all I can say about your logs are two things:

    1. you are clean
    2. but you have no antivirus application installed which is very dangerous. You should observe the steps in: How to Protect yourself from malware!

    You're problems may be related to your DSL connection itself.

    Dear Chaslang:

    I used my work laptop with the same connection, and the download speed was correct, so there is some annoying little piece **** somewhere in my current system set-up which is creating this problem. I am actually running Zone-Alarm, and it had been working great, until I encountered this annoyance. I really appreciate that you took the time to help me, and that you are a wonderful resource for the anti-malware and geek community.

    Its starting to look like I'm going to have to do a fresh installation.

    It does not appear to be anything that I can help you with in the Malware Forum. As you suggest, check everything related to your configuration settings.
