are you buy chance downloading videos? because maybe.. if you click on the open/save link to the video, maybe it's just loading up in IE or Quicktime. By the way, which browser are u using?

a dialog box should pop up whenever you click a download link. it must have opened for you because you said it tells you "download complete" afterwards. it must be on your harddrive somewhere. do a search then (F3 while on desktop or start > search files and folders) for "aol" and "aware" in your local drives. then if you find the .exe installation file, report back here.

When you download, you should have a dialog box asking where to save ..choose desktop.
If they still disappear ...would suggest an online scan (broadband is much more suseptible to viruses and malware than dial-up:
    Panda online active scan

i have tried panda online scan i got this messaage An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are:

Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.

    Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,... i allowed the activex to be downloaded but then got this message

As to the limited or no connectivity ....right click network places ...right click local network (if you are hardwired ...same if wireless) ....hit repair.

try going into command prompt and doing an ipconfig /all. if this shows bogus info, ipconfig /release, shut off modem and turn modem back on. it should work for you. also following Tim's directions will work.

Also, did you have a computer hooked up with your broadband before this one? Just wondering cause at my fiance's house they had a computer hooked up to their dsl modem and when you plugged it into a different computer it wouldn't work. ended up having to plug in the original, releaseing the ip, turning off the modem, then hooking the other pc up to it. sucked really bad.

You might have a read at MS article I listed below. It sounds like it could be your problem, but you haven't mentioned that sometimes the "File Download dialog box unexpectedly closes". However, it is the only thing I could find where your downloads just disappear.

ok.. yo usay that the downloading dialog box unexpectantly closes and never says "download complete". try this, next time you download something, and considering you're on broadband now, be vigilant and quick to UNCHECK the "close this dialog box when download completes".

It's easier to do this via regedit. Launch regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main and make sure the NotifyDownloadComplete value is set to 'yes' (without quotes).

Please do not edit the registry unles you know what you are doing.

I fail to see how manually editing entries in the registry is 'easier' than unticking a checkbox.

Alternativly copy the text below into notepad and save it as NotifyDLComp.reg and use it to merge the value with the registry, without having to go digging about manually.

    Code:
    Regedit 4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "NotifyDownloadComplete"="yes"

It's only easier when you have to uncheck something that is on the screen for maybe less than one second. But in general, you're absolutely right.

Well the registry patch way would also be better. I just prefer not to ask people to go into the registry and manually edit stuff as often you have no idea of the level of their competence. Its just safer lol ;)

OK, let's try downloading firefox the hard way and see if it will work. Follow these instructions EXACTLY as stated.
    1. Open a command prompt (start->run, type cmd and press enter)
    2. type cd <where you want firefox>, if the path contains spaces, enclose it with quotes.
    3. Now the command line should read [path you set]>
    4. Type ftp releases.mozilla.org and press enter.
    5. When it asks for a user name, type anonymous and press enter. For the password type anything (will not appear on screen) and again press enter.
    You should now see ftp>
    6. Type cd /pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.6/win32/en-US/ (case-sensitive, so be exact) and press enter.
The server should reply with '250 Directory successfully changed.'
    7. Type binary and enter
    8. Type mget *.* and enter again
    9. Answer each of the questions with 'y' (no quotes) and press enter
    10. FTP should now download firefox setup to the directory you specified at the start.
    11. When done, type quit and enter.
    12. Go look for the firefox setup and execute it.

If you encounter errors or problems post them here.
Surf around a bit with FF and see if it too can't download stuff.

    Good luck!

that's a longer route, but good to learn alternative ways to do the same feat.
