Download problem

I have trouble downloading large files. During downloads the download will just stop. I don't get an error, or anything. The data just stops coming to my computer but the windows act like everything is going fine. The download dialogs will stay how they were for long periods of time (i've let it sit for half an hour before with no new data before cancelling the download).

I've lately gotten around it with a download manager but I like to watch movie trailers from apple.com/trailers. The wierdest part is I can use programs like everquest and Kazaa fine with no problems.

This problem doesn't happen when I connect directly into the DSL modem and I bypass my router. I know that it has something to do with how the router is set up, but I'm not sure exactly what. My dad uses the internet connection for Boeing so I can't mess around with it too much. If I ruin the internet connection he will kill me ;).

I use windows XP pro and I use a linksys router. I'm not quite sure right now the exact model but it is one of the wireless ones (I connect directly with a cable to the router but my dad uses the wireless). I am also using a westell modem that is a pain in the butt.

Any ideas on what I should be looking for is greatly appreciated. I don't know what else could be causing this in the router and I can't go through and change everything blindly. thanks.

    Download DrTCP:
    http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe

Run the program, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

    Start with:

    MaxMTU - DSL =1492 Cable = 1500 ISDN=1322 DialUp = 576

Tcp Receive - 256960 (This is the varaible to play with!)

    Window Scaling - Yes

    Time Stamping - No

    Selective Acks - Yes

    Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

    Black Hole - NO

    Max Duplicate - 2

    TTL - 64

Notice it said above Start with

These settings are not written in "stone" there is variability depending on the computer other setting. So try few setting and measure your Download for each setting.

In addition, in case a person has a Router the Router's MTU if set differently can affect the general MTU.
