    Hi guys,

    I've got a weird problem...

When downloading a big file, my PC locks up briefly then allows me to move the cursor, then locks up again. This happens constantly during a download. I thought it was something to do with my download manager, but I completely reformatted and reinstalled XP and it still happened. I tried different download managers, but everytime I got over 400 or 500 KB/s it did the same thing. I am using "Free Download Manager". I found (by accident) that if I put the PC in "standby" then resume usage, the PC works correctly and I can get the full 15MB/s out of it without the freeze ups. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I am befuddled by it.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Mark

What FREE download manager are you using? Then specs on pc?

That is it's name: Free Download Manager - FDM.exe.

The pc is an HP Pavilion m760n I believe.

    3GHz P4
    1GB DDR RAM
    200GB HDD
    XP SP3

I should add that when this is happening, I can see on the CPU meter, it pegs out in a spike then drops back to 4% usage or so, then back to 100% then back to 4 or so... I've looked at what else is running and I can't find anything unusual. I also don't understand how putting the PC in standby and bringing it back out would change anything...

    Hi

Check what file/app could be causing this by using Process Explorer and monitor a download and when it spikes note the file/app using 100% CPU and then we can see what maybe causing this.

Also disable your AntiVirus and check that its not causing this.

    Hi Halo,

The only thing it shows maxxing out is "deferred procedure calls". How can I find out what these procedures might be that are causing this? I read somewhere else people were having this problem caused by the GeForce 6800. I don't have that card, I have integrated graphics on the motherboard on this computer, so that cant be my problem I don't think, but it could be another driver problem maybe?

I put the PC in standby and resumed and then the DPC is only 4-6% while downloading. Oh, btw, this happened when I didn't have any antivirus installed. Currently I'm running AVG Free 8.5.

I d/l'd the latest drivers for my integrated graphics and had no luck, still works the same... :(

Question Here. What anti malware, anti-virus programs are you using? Reason I ask is possible infection there with Free download manger.

    According A-squared FDM.exe is Adware.Win32.Free Download Manager.

So you might want to make sure and post this in Malware forum? There somebody should be able to help ensure you have a clean system. Then if you are still having problems with downloading large files and your system freezes. Someone here should be able to help.

In the previous post I stated I'm running AVG Free 8.5 antivirus. Free Download Manager 3.0 is available as a download from majorgeeks.com, and is the recommended download manager that I was advised to use in the forum here a while back or so I read in the forum someplace. I downloaded it from majorgeeks.com so there should not be a problem with it. BTW, I've tried other d/l managers as well, and all of them displayed the same problem.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Have you done a scan for malware, spyware and the rest of the lot? If so which program are you using?

Sorry I did note that you mentioned AVG 8.5 in the previous post... have you checked your event viewer for any possible errors during the time?

I haven't scanned for malware or spyware. I just reinstalled WinXP from scratch and have not loaded anything else except FDM.exe and AVG Free 8.5. Both of those downloads were from majorgeeks.com. I checked my event viewer, and have seen no errors other than a few hung applications, probably IE7. I was having this problem before reinstalling WinXP SP3 and I had run spybot s&d and Trendmicro's Housecall at that time, but not since the reinstall.

I found this old post concerning Trendmicro and DPCs
You no longer run it but it could have been a cause before you re-installed. Perhaps you need to look over AVG's settings.
Next in that thread, was this post
Have a look at your windows services.

I'll see if I can dig up any more software discovered as a root cause of DPC spiking high usage.

As far as Trendmicro goes, I never had it installed on the machine. I was running their online scanner "housecall". AVG isn't the cause because it was happening before I installed it.

Concerning USB devices, I have a few:

    1. Gyration Mouse/Kbd USB device
    2. IR sensor for controlling the computer via remote control.
    3. Edirol USB input device for audio equipment (guitars, mics, etc...)
    4. Wifi d-link adapter

I think that is all. I'll go through those one by one and see if the problem goes away (at least 2 and 3 anyways, have to have 1 and 4)... I'll let you know the outcome of that test when I do it.

    Thanks,
    Mark

One thing that still nags at me though is why, after going into stand-by and then coming out of it, everything works fine in the same configuration...

That I can't explain. After all these years, computers still remain a mystery to me. I have seven computers in the house. Most of them are running windows 2000. On one computer I lost the copy disk in the right click menu. I went through every fix I could find. I then sat down with my laptop and this desktop and went over the registry settings. Both are exactly the same. I haven't been able to figure out why this one computer won't allow me to copy a disk. (I have to use a command from a DOS prompt if I want to do it on this computer). It's been like that for a couple of years. I have no idea why it disappeared and no idea what "magic" command or registry entry I need to get it back.

lol...that's for sure. Just when I think I have these things figured out, something else weird happens. I've got 5 pc's myself between the wife, kids and my own. They always keep me busy with something on them. That's not including all the neighbors that bring their computers to me to fix... I don't know if this problem is really worth spending a lot of time on since all I have to do is put it in standby and then revive it to eliminate the problem. Once I do that, the computer runs constantly until there is a power outage or an auto reboot for some update or something. So I don't have to worry about it too often. Goofy machines...
