    Hi,

I've tried searching for info on this (honestly!) but haven't found anything really specific to my problem.
Apparently C:\Windows\Explorer.exe has been infected by the Download.trojan virus. Obviously I can't delete it because it's running the shell. Can anyone help me as to how to clean or replace it?

    Many thanks.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

After running the READ ME! Follow the steps below.

Download SpSeHjfix to your desktop and then right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix

Unzip the file into that folder

Disconnect from the internet and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".

When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder we created.
If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and run HijackThis! Have it fix the below entries (but only after closing all browsers):
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.iframe.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.newiframe.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.pizdato.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vse-moe.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sp2admin.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.clickspring.net
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mt-download.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotch.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.windupdates.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.c4tdownload.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.ysbweb.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.overpro.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.awmdabest.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.traffic2cash.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.admin2cash.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.bettersearch.biz
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.addictivetechnologies.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.addictivetechnologies.net
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.f1organizer.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.crazywinnings.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.topconverting.com
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone

Now get a new HJT log and come back here and attach it to a message along with the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Note: You must go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Messenger Plus! 3. It puts a variety of malware on your PC including LOP.

OK I've done everything you said and attached the logs.

I had real trouble with the things in the first README - the online scans wouldn't work, CCleaner failed with an error in <unknown>, and both Ad-Aware SE and Spybot froze (while trying to get rid of ISearch.Tech.Sidefind I think).

But I had no problems at all with SpSeHjfix, CWShredder or HijackThis, the logs are attached. Not all of the previous entries were found in HijackThis this time, so I suppose that's good... I just got rid of the ones that were there.

By the way I don't know why Iexplore.exe is in the HijackThis logfile, it definitely wasn't running - or the time before.

Okay Don! Let's continue with the cleanup! You are a real spyware collector aren't you. ;)

Are you using anything by these Teknum Systems people? They are known to put malware into PCs. The line I'm questioning in your log is:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Update Service] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teknum Systems\update.exe" /startup

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SVHOST.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VIDEO2.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\VIBWNWV.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IPUINT35.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTOUPDATE\AUTOUPDATE.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\ISTSVC\ISTSVC.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\INIWSELC.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CXTPLS\CXTPLS.EXE

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NSM4354.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SVHOST.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VIDEO2.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\VIBWNWV.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IPUINT35.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\INIWSELC.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\185E9B67.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\VIBWNWV.EXE

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTOUPDATE <--- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\ISTSVC <--- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CXTPLS <--- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\SIDEFIND <--- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\YOURSI~1 <--- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\180solutions <--- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Yeah the perils of having a shared computer with a load of other students...

I'm pretty sure I don't have any Teknum stuff. I use Spybot frequently and it always seems to delete anything from Teknum updater anyway.

OK it all went fine except the files and folder -
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NSM4353.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\khifwisp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SE.DLL
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\180solutions
weren't there to delete. I got rid of all the other stuff OK.

I've attached a new HJT log. I was finally able to delete the explorer.exe file in my Norton AntiVirus quarantine.

So now things seem to be OK for the moment, I'll get back to you if anything goes wrong. If they don't though, many many thanks, I really appreciate it!

You're welcome. That's much better. Now to help keep it that way you must follow the steps in the below link. You are way out of date with your Windows Updates and need some other stuff too.
