Downloaded software that supposedly contains a trojan

Howdy,

I downloaded Cain and Abel 4.9.25 twice in the past week. Both times Avast! Home ed AV says it contains a trojan.
Since I get very few false alarms, I suspect this file but thought you should know.
I do check all downloaded files for malware.

And I do enjoy your site.

 

If you downloaded it from Majorgeeks.com then it is a false positive. We also test all downloads before making them available

 

Might I inquire what AV programs you use?

"Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols."

Downloads in Covert can set off alarms due to the nature of the software. Example is a keylogger, I had one installed for a legit reason. Rather than copy/paste repetitive rules I hit a key to post rules. I did not install for covert reasons, was just a tool I used but it can be used for spying on people too and AV rightfully picked it up as a trojan.

"Some virus scanners, notably Avast! detect Cain and Abel as 'malware' "Win32:Cain-B [Tool]". The latest version of Avast no longer blocks Cain."

Hope that helps explain why you have a AV warning.
