I have this Downloader-BEW problem that doesn't seem to want to go away. When I initially boot up my pc, McAfee detects infected files. The files that it detects are various .exe files. The most common I see is(C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exe\HPZTSB04.EXE)

I have gone through all instructions to clean my pc. here are the logs attached.

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please uninstall the CounterSpy trial now since we are finished with it.

You need to rename HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe as requested in the READ ME. You have this:

    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

    And it should be this:

    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\analyse.exe

    Rename it now.

Is the below GoRemote software something you installed?
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: goremote - C:\Program Files\iPass\Mobile Office 6\6.2.3.4\CBL\GoRemoteCBL.dll

These files are not malware. They are part of the HP DeskJet software you installed. It loads like this:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exe

You do have a file related to the Downloader-BEW infection in your Temp folder though. So let's fix what I see and we will go from there.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

chaslang, thanks for the response, I followed all your instructions and have attached the updated log files. Unfortunately the Downloader-BEW virus window is still popping up from McAfee. One thing to note was after running the avenger tool, and after the reboot, notepad came up, but it was am empty window and had a message that could not find file "C:\avenger.txt". So this file I was unable to attach. All other steps went ok.

Also for your question of the GoRemote...yes that is software that I installed.

You need to shutdown McAfee and then run the procedure with Avenger again and then attach all new logs.

Also if McAfee is reporting anything, please tell me exactly what and where. Is it still reference the HP file?

Your current logs look good however the primary problems seems to remain.

We need to download and run FindAWF by noahdfear.
    • Please download FindAWF by noahdfear.
    • Save to your desktop.
    • Double-click the FindAWF icon.
      • If a Security Alert shows, allow the program to run.
    • As instructed, press any key to continue.
    • Use the following option: Press 1 then Enter to scan for bak folders
    • The scan may take a while, please be patient.
    • When done, a text file, Find AWF report is produced.
    • Please attach the Find AWF report in your next post.

Are you still getting the alerts from McAfee?

Also, attach fresh logs from ShowNew, GetRunKey & HijackThis.

Unfortunately yes I am still getting the pop-up. Although now it seems to be pointing to a different file. Here is the exact message I am getting from McAfee now:

    Access to file was denied

    Virus name:
    Downloader-BEW

    Infected file name:
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe\QTTASK.EXE

    VirusScan suggests
This infected file cannot be deleted. You should delete the file and replace it with a clean copy. Your data will not be affected.

    Also new logs attached.
    Thanks,
