Downloading Files

Hey Geeks,

Sometimes I notice my cable modem light blinking when here is No Browser activity going on OR it blinks long after a page has completed loading.

I'm concerned that "nasty people" are pushing things onto my PC without my knowledge.

Some of this activity is surely automatic updates from MicroSoft and virus vendor, but I'd feel Safer if I had some record of what is going on.

Is there a utility that allows you to monitor what files are being downloaded in realtime into a log ?
Maybe also give you a mechanism to STOP anything you don't recognize ?

Any Ideas ?

Hi

What Windows version are you using?

Net access can also be as the lights are blinking from your ISP just pinging you to see if you are still online, but this should not be a constant blinking so is this blinking of the activity light on all the time?

Is your modem also a WiFi one? if so have you secured the wifi signal to say WPA at least?

Can use NetLimiter to see what apps are using the net, its a free app HERE

A firewall can stop any application from accessing the internet but you would have to know if it was legit or not, can search the net for the actual file name and see if its ok or not, if its not ok then you dont want to just stop it, you need to remove it as it could be linked to malware.

Some applications like Defrag and Backup use TCP/IP so can as they link via the network connection display this, even if you are not using their networking capabilities.

Windows Vista.

Modem:
SBV5120 Surfboard cable modem

I'll look into NetLimiter... maybe this is close to what I had in mind :=)
