    Hello,

I am working through your preliminiary cleanup procedures to address an apparent recent hijack of my IE homepage. It's been switched from Earthlink, my ISP, to MSN and will not allow my to switch it back. Anyway, when I click on the links to download GetRunKey and ShowNew I get a page telling me I am either not signed in or don't have permission to access these pages. Any help?

    Thanks,

    Jean

I have seen this issue myself, it is because the link opens a new window.

Just log in with your username and password in the new window and the download will start.

Thanks, I've tried that but it won't log me in here. It keeps bringing me back to the same screen saying that I'm either not logged in or I don't have permissions to access this file.

    Hi jfishfish

Have you tried when logging in to click the small box called "remember me" when logging in, this tends to help.

If not we will think of a different way to get you those 2 files.

    Hi,

No, I hadn't. I've come across the warning against storing passwords with this function quite often so I haven't been using it. Is it not true that this is the kind of file hackers look for to break into accounts?

While fairly true, that cookies could give info to malware writers ( hackers is a term used way too much in the description of malware stealing software over a hacker who purposely hacks your PC and a hacker attacking random PCs is pretty rare ) when their keylogging or data capture software runs and sends its finding back.

However you can easily once you have downloaded the files delete your cookies ( In IE goto Tools > Internet Options > and Delete Cookies and Temp Internet Files ).

Okay, thanks I will try that. I didn't realize this information was saved as a temporary file, I thought it was something permanent. I delete cookies and temp files after every online session.

    No problems,

You are following the same good practice I do in deleting current session cookies and temps, now you should be able to complete the guide and attach the logs and our malware experts should/will be able to find the culprit and assist you in removing it.
