I have downloaded Exact Audio Copy. It tells me that I need to download a LAME program separately and locate it in the same folder as EAC. That's the problem. I saved EAC to C\Program Files(x86). When I try to direct the Lame download (from RareWares.de) to the same folder I get a Windows message telling me I am not authorized to do so - would I like to save it to somewhere else instead? I would not, unless there's some reason I should.
I am the sole user of this pc and the administrator so it shouldn't be giving me this dismissive attitude:(. Is it something I did? Thanks for any help you can offer.

p.s. I don't know the difference between Program Files and Program Files(x86), and I couldn't tell you at this point whether I chose that as the destination for EAC or it went there itself. Either way, I had no authorization issues then.

No, you installed EAC that by default installs to the Program Files(x86) directory.
That's because a non-elevated program (your browser) can only save files to user space not system space.
The solution is to download to user space (eg. your Downloads directory). Then move the Lame codec to the EAC installation folder.
Do not under any circumstances run your browser as administrator in order to save files to system space.

I followed your instructions up to a point but got stuck. I downloaded LAME 3.99.5 to my downloads folder. I moved my EAC installer (EAC-1.0 beta3.exe) from the desktop to the downloads folder and tried to drag the LAME to it, but all that did was start up the installer. Since I have already installed it, it never gets to the point where it asks me if I have downloaded LAME. It just opens up the EAC interface, like "there you go!"
Do I need to uninstall EAC and start over?
    Thanks,

I went ahead and uninstalled EAC from Program files and started a new install. I'm at the point where it's telling me to download LAME (which I've done). It says, "If the LAME download is just a ZIP archive, open it and copy all files into the same directory where you did install EAC." That's Program Files, right? And Windows is not allowing me to do that. I tried dragging the Zip file. I tried extracting the files first and using cut/paste to move it into EAC. I tried dragging the extracted file. I get the "You'll need to provide Administrator Permission to move this folder" message in each case. :confused

When you did this, did you click the Continue button on the "You'll need to provide administrator permission <snip>" prompt?

Yes I did, and the Lame file disappeared from the downloads folder but I can't find it in EAC. I left the Lame download wizard waiting here until I heard back from you... I just clicked ahead and it found the Lame file. :)
    Many thanks for your help.
