    Hi,

Yesterday, I seemed to have downloaded a piece of software without my consent that has caused some problems with my PC, specifically my internet browsing experience.

I had initially used malware malbytes as my standard procedure and sybot- two techniques that have usually worked in the past but both have failed. I also have norton 360 do a run, and nothing was found.

The two main issues so far are these

1.- Random links to sites are generated from relevant searches when clicked on and even when urls are manually typed in.

2.- All my downloading capabilities have stopped. Whenever I click the save file option, the file automatically cancels itself and even if I do retry and it shows a download bar, the file automatically deletes itself in the respective directory.

This problem is not isolated to one browser on my system, but across the board on other backup browsers that I have namely Chrome, IE, seamonkey, safari and opera- with firefox being my primary.

I have run several diagnostic searches as outlined in the readme post, and have attached them below.

Do let me know if there is anyway of removing this piece of malware without a re-format.

    Thanks

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

You missed a good few steps from the procedures. Please uninstall the below:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 20
    • Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    • Viewpoint Media Player

You need to download and run SUPERantispyware as per the instructions and attach the log from doing so.

You failed to attach the logs from runing MBAM:

    • C:\Users\user1\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2011-03-20 (10-46-27).txt
    • C:\Users\user1\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2011-03-20 (18-40-15).txt

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

What is inside of these folders? Tell me exactly, or show me with a screenshot
    • C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\{1B4DF0CA-EEB7-4348-9CD3-3154065EE2C4}
    • C:\Users\user1\AppData\Roaming\C7A97286BDD3930BC6949A2188BFD5A5

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

You need to download and run Ccleaner at this point.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now you need to download Combofix and run it as per the instructions.

Re run TDSSKiller and attach the log.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Keep going. I can see one of those folders is a problem. The other is questionable unless it relates to some sort of game... We will deal with it soon. I have to do a short shift at work and then will return to finish up with you in a couple hours.

Please find attached the new MGlogs file- the file step posted. Unfortunately, there has been no change in the system- downloads still do not happen and links are automatically redircted elsewhere.

    Thanks

Again you missed a step. If combofix had been run it would have targeted this one folder at least I am sure. Let's continue on being careful not to miss anything this time.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:

    :services
    Viewpoint Service

    :files
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\{1B4DF0CA-EEB7-4348-9CD3-3154065EE2C4}
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Roaming\C7A97286BDD3930BC6949A2188BFD5A5
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\Gqisise.bin
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\Sdami.dat
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Now run Combofix!

    Run Ccleaner again.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Have the redirects ceased?

    Hi

I followed everything you said to the 't' and..sucess!. Downloads have restored themselves and no redirects have happened so far. I'll keep my eye on it for a few days, but hopefully this should be the end of it.

Thanks again for your help and saving me the trouble of sitting up all night and reformatting!

That's great! Surf around for a day or two then, but do come back and let me know how things are because you will need to follow final steps which I will link you with once you report back. :)

Looks like my solution was short lived- this morning the redirect of search results started again this morning. One upside though- the downloads have resumed without issue and the only problem now is the site redirects.

Picking up from your last solution, please find attached the logs as requested for OTM and getlogs.bat

    Thanks

All browsers are redirecting? SeaMoneky, Chrome, Firefox and Internet explorer?

after running all the browsers for a while- it seems isolated to my primary- Firefox. Also, if this helps the sites all redirect to goingonearth.com for a brief second then onto another site.

Okay then, a little more to try, I spotted a file I meant to include for deletion last time and missed it for some reason...!!

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\windows\lsrslt.ini

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now try using firefox again after a reboot of the machine and if it is STILL redirecting then we will have to have you back up all your bookmarks, download a fresh version of firefox but do not install it yet!!! Uninstall Firefox by using Revo Uninstaller as it does a more thorough job than the standard uninstaller.

Now reboot the machine and reinstall Firefox.

    Redirects stopped?

Tried the last set of instructions- still no luck. I also unfortunately have to report that IE 9 has now also started acting up and is now redirecting google links as well.

Here is the log from the last set of instructions attached below.

so far so good. Nothing to report. On an unrelated note- the fan in my system has started to become nosier after the malware removal began, specifically when I run Firefox. I dunno if its related or just coincidence, but apart from that everything is good so far!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
