Drakensang: The Dark Eye

Did anyone ever play the Dark Eye games? They were really popular in Germany as pen and paper, kinda like D&D, but way more successful overseas than D&D. They were also a bunch of really old computer/video games, too. Anyway, I read an article about a new party-based RPG that they made and are bringing over from Germany, and it looks really good from what I've seen so far of it:

Character can spend experience points on-the-fly. They're actually called "adventure points" here, and while they're still manually distributed to improve stats and abilities, you can spend them instantly, no waiting for arbitrary level-up-dings. Levels are still here as a derivative of overall experience points, but merely to cap your spending in a given area.

Has anyone played an RPG with a points system like that? I'm thinking it could be really cool... there's nothing worse than sitting there trying to hit that next level but not having enough skills/stats to get there...
