My 14 year old daughter is into anime. She loves to draw. She can draw it by hand without a problem. But I want her to draw by using the computer, hence I need to know if there are any programs out there that are fairly inexpensive that she can use. Remember she is 14 and not so computer literate so if there is one for beginners that would be great.

I will have to get some pics of her stuff and post them.

Hey Chris, thanks for the info. I will look over them with her and she can decide which one she wants. Her mom and I are working on encouraging her to get to an art school. I would like her to come to philly. her mom of course wants her to stay in texas. imagine that. it doesn't really matter though, as long as she his happy at whatever school.

Personally I would draw it out by hand, scan it then path and colour it using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Perfectly acceptable method.

On the same line as Goldy,
    Get her a tablet.
Draw it out and then place the drawing under the tablets trace cover. Then she can trace it right to canvas. It will help her get used to drawing with a tablet. After a while, she probably won't use the trace much. I've always preferred painter over the extremely convoluted, ergonomically disjointed and non logically flowing photoshop.

    Great thread.

I have recently joined a colorist group where we post and exchange pieces we color. I have been relegated to using MSpaint to complete my pieces. It takes forever, but my results are comparable to some of the other pieces. I am looking into Photoshop, but after finding this thread (and the subsequent links provided), I now have something to work with.

    Thanks for the info.

FYI: frazzled - there are many yahoo groups that your daughter may like to join. My particular group may be a little inappropriate, but I'm certain there is one out there that would suit her. There is nothing like having a group of people with common interests exchanging art. Also, it is a good way to get tips from more experienced users. Good luck. I'm going to share this program with my daughters - it looks great. Can't wait to play!

Thank you all for the information. Mentioned the tablet thing and she seems to think that may be the way to go. She is very excited. But I also pointed her in the direction of the artrage and pixia sites. She likes them a lot. I just hope she sticks with it. You know how 14 year olds are. Her today.......anyway, thank you all for the advice.....much appreciated.
