I have a Inspiron 6000 and I get an error has occured and windows was shut down to protect computer. Even under safe mode it doesn't always run. I am having reg key errors, fails memory tests, and once in a while some programs will run but not complete (AVG 8.0, RegCure). System restore somehow was shut off, and won't run anyhow. The only formatt disk i have is Wind XP Os disc (absolutely nothing else added). trying to avoid that....anything would be helpful Thank You.

It is unlikely that this is a malware problem. I'm moving this to the Software Forum.

I just wanted to update. Problem resolved!! i don't know if it was coincidence or one lead to another. But i had a trojan and a bad Sodimm ram chip. Any newer updates were corrupt along with troubleshooting software and quite a bit of the harddrive. I have since wiped all partitions and installed a bare bones XP OS and I'm up loading new drivers as I find them. I just need to keep it running 5-6 months till a new one is purchased. Thank you for your help.

You mentioned a bad RAM chip.... you didn't say if it was replaced. I hope it was! If not, you're asking for more problems in the future. Formatting the hard drive will have no effect on a faulty memory stick. Bad memory will cause random crashes, rebooting, freezing and lock ups, corrupt data, slow access to data and internet, and is generally a very frustrating and unpleasant experience until it's removed and/or replaced.

The bad Ram module/chip has been removed, not yet replaced. I will probably get a new one as soon as I'm done updating drivers and reinstalling the important software. FYI, the factory chip is running great. It was a newer one that failed by K-byte!
