Drive Sectors Hdd Vs Ssd - I’m Confused

briefly, all data is backed up, replacement parts have been ordered, practical reality says to get my mom a new computer to replace her 10 yr old computer. i’m just looking for a textbook explanation as to why there are bad sectors if the physical medium checks out clean.

basics: my mom’s computer is win7 pro 64 bit. 2 years ago, i cloned the C: drive from a mechanical HDD to a samsung 870 evo SSD. it’s been working beautifully since then. 2 days ago, i tried to use acronis and image the C: drive, but acronis said it can’t because of bad sectors.

crystaldiskinfo says the SSD is in good health. samsung magician software diagnostic test reports the SSD in good health. however, the SMART self test reports LBA failure and unknown errors.

the computer works fine, boots fine, and all programs work fine. the computer functions perfectly, as one would expect. the physical SSD gets reports of clean health. i just can’t take an image of it because of “bad sectors”. and i’m thinking that cloning software won’t work either.

so… i’m confused and my brain fogs over as i have been trying to research this. i understand the concept of drive sectors in mechanical hard drives, but i am at a loss with SSDs.

    anyway, thanks for any help/explanation.

oh, i forgot to mention that the samsung magician software says that there is an update to the SSD firmware, but there is no mention as to what the update fixes/enhances. I know that, in general, this is a good thing to do. but since i am clutching at straws and don't understand why bad sectors exist on a "healthy" SSD, i am going to put this off until replacement parts arrive. i'll report back once i have some time to get a disaster scenario plan in place.

i'll update this in another month or so. practical reality won, and i got my mom a new-to-us computer with win10 on it. i'm going to wait until my brother gets back from the cargo ship he is currently on [ since he is the windows guy ] and then we'll get my mom moved over to the new computer. once that is done, i'll experiment with her win7 computer and the SSD that is in it. she still uses her win7 computer just fine, no issues, so who knows. only thing i can think of is that the cloning process from mechanical hard drive to SSD confused the SMART test?? or something. it's a gut feeling, but probably just gas. i'll update the SSD firmware then, and rerun the samsung software to see if it made a difference. yea for technology!
