Driver download issue

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100, 510 MB, recenlty I had an issue with Smit-fraud and Spy Axe which caused me to download hijackthis. Fortunatley this solved my problem, however in the process I believe I deleted some impotant files. The issue I am having is with downloading any kind of drivers (Printer and a USB storage device) The computer goes through thte whole download process and at the very end I get the message that states "unable to complete install" no reason or code. Not sure what information to give here. Please help.

 

I forgot to mention that I am running XP Home Addition. In addition I have an error message that comes up when booting my computer, not sure if this is linked to my other issue or not..the error is..Application failed to inialize properly 0xc0000135. I greatly apreciate any assistance

Thank you for the reply. I am already running service pack 2 and have checked for all updates doesn't seem to help. I did see something for service pack 6, but that looked like it's not for me. Any other ideas? Is it possible that that error message is what is causing my download issues?

 

OK...I tried the XP repair disc, no avail, I read in Dell forum that I need to "slipstream" the disc for SP2...does anyone know anything about this process? Maybe Im in over my head.....All of my previously installed drivers seem to operate fine, my problem is installing any new hardware.
