Driver Reviver Query.

I’ve downloaded Driver Reviver but both Defender & MalwareBytes state this is a PUA: PUA:Win32/Caypnamer.A!ml which is certainly not what I expected.
What do other users think?

 

Where did you download from? You probably already know this, but just in case not... For multiple antivirus opinions, do an online scan with VirusTotal. If multiple legit sources flag the app, I'd be careful about downloading/installing.

I’ve scanned the download url with virustotal & it’s clean. Haven’t scanned the .exe yet but will do so.

 

I’ve now scanned the .exe. 7 AV entries give a warning from a Trojan to a PUP. Malwarebytes lists the file as a PUP. The others show Undetected.

 

Don't you hate it when 'half' the experts scream warnings while the other half flag OK? Unless actual users chime in... now it boils down to how much you want it?

I have a similar situation with Clover, a Chinese app that improves Windows Explorer immensely. Dozens (not just 7) scream warnings but dozens more say 'safe' - with AV heavyweights on both sides! In the end, I really wanted it, and so I downloaded and installed it. I also put in safeguards - such as signing in as 'standard' user (as a matter of course) and specifically forbidding clover.exe from communicating in or out the firewall. It's been many years, and no mishaps.

 

Driver updaters are often targeted by AVs because they change critical system files.

It is annoying.
It’s something I’ll have to think through. I’ll await to see what their support says on the matter. If nothing then I’ll leave it.
