driver scan

    Is there a safe scanner for updating drivers rather than looking each one up at the manufacturer's site?

    I do not update drivers unless I'm having a specific problem. Then, rather than running a program, I go to the manufacturer of my computer, find my model and see if the manufacturer has released a newer driver.

    But if you just want to get a general feeling which of your devices have new drivers available, http://drivermax.com/ is worth trying. It's free for up to two driver downloads per day.

    I also do not advocate to update device drivers just for the sake of it, but sometimes other program updates (Adobe Flash Player!) will work much better with newer drivers on the system.

    Also, never bother looking at what Microsoft suggests as hardware updates. When I was younger and sillier, I used an MS suggestion twice and got burned both times because it broke something that had been working. Now when I go to the update site, I stick to critical/security but I might stick my nose in software and sometimes accept a software update.

    It can be tricky at my level to know which is good or bad.
    I have been downloading whatever M.S. was telling me to do after a scan.
    I gather I should only download critical/security.
