Good morning geeks, I'm running XP Home SP3.

I just recently lost the ability to open links from Outlook e-mail, this problem was solved and caused by experimenting with a new browser and my default did not reset upon removal. One of the steps taken in solving the problem was running a series of .dll files in the Start/Run box. During this process, all registered ok except one.

When running regsvr32 Mshtml.dll, I get an error message reading "Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered."

What does this driver do, what does this message mean and how can I fix it. Right now I do not experience any issues with either system operation of Outlook operation, so am not sure if I even need to fix it.

    Thanks for your help.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, keni254.

I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". However, I also hate annoyances. ;)

Do you have your Win XP disk? If so, running 'sfc /scannow' might clear things up (you might not need the disk, but many times the XP file checker requires it).

    Hi

What location is that dll in?
What is its properties as in file version?

Try un-registering that file then re-registering it as its a self registering file normally, but to un-reg its this command from the CMD or Run box

    regsvr32 /u mshtml.dll

If it still wont work then try sfc /scannow from a CMD prompt.

What IE version you running as some advice online regards to DLLs to register are not applicable to IE versions from 7 upwards.

In response to your first question, take a look at the attached screen shot after I did a search on the file name. Then after you stop laughing, tell me where the file should be located.

I'm running IE8.0.6 and sorted the search by date.

    Hi

Hahahahaha just had to be one of those DLLs thats all over the place, most in the screenshot are in the update cab folders and are not the ones that are live, the main one is indeed in the right place in system32

Do you have Spybot S&D on your PC, or if not also please name all the security apps you have as one maybe blocking your re-registering of the DLL or as you will have updates to IE8 the original installs registration of the DLL. So to try and fix this disable all security applications and see if you can re-register the DLL again.

You could also from a run box try and re-register all of these and hit enter after each one.

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll (this one can take a while to re-register so dont worry if its been 10mins or so)
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 msjava.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Also make sure you have the lastest Java Runtime and Adobe Flash for your Windows version installed, also check date and time as sometimes if you have not change to DST etc then the clock being out can cause issues.

If all the above doesnt work then try IEFIX HERE and see if that works.

I will run through all of this and let you know.
I am one of those who believes that no anti-virus app is 100%, so I keep alternates on an external HD that is not on most of the time because it has a manual on-off button. I run Norton Security Suite on the PC and every other week or so run one or two of the following from the external HD:
    Malwarebytes
    Super Anti Spyware
Spybot S&D (finds the unusual stuff)
Emisoft A2 (very strong with Trojans deep in the system)
