So I am trying to reinstall windows xp on my machine. Haven't reinstalled in forever (3+ years.) The last time windows was reinstalled it was apparently an unauthorized version and since Microsoft put in that WGA crap I haven't been able to update, so I do not have any service packs (the main reason for the reinstall to a version already at sp3 and that can pass the wga.)

Now the problem is I boot from disk, it loads normally and gets through all the loading of drivers etc, as soon as I get to the partition screen I get the BSOD with

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Tech Info:
    STOP: 0x000000D1 (0X008A0090, 0X00000002,0X00000001, 0XF76EA800)

    USBPORT.SYS - Address F76EA800 base at F76CF000 Datestamp 480254ce

I looked into the error and I have not found any forum thread that has the same circumstances at me, the majority of these type of errors I have read about happen randomly, or while playing games. My computer has run fine for the last 4-5 years (yes it is incredibly ancient) with almost no problems. I certainly have not seen this error before.

I tried updating my sound/video/nic drivers to no avail (updating my video drivers was a bad idea, led to me having to remove my video card.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

If you can still boot to Windows then try installing the Chipset drivers again for that PCs motherboard, then if it has on the driver page any USB drivers install them.

Do you have a logitech USB device, be that mouse, keyboard or webcam? if so update its drivers.

If wanting to reinstall XP, then if you do have a logitech USB device, unplug it as well as any other USB hardware while installing Windows, if you have alternative mouse and keyboard use that.

In the future, if you don't do it already, set up a System Restore point before installing anything. Especially Service Packs, and hardware. That way, at least if you can get into Safe Mode, you can put the PC back to "as was".
