I run AdAware , CCleaner and UWClean after every session, and System Mechanic 2-3 times a week. For firewall I have ZoneAlarm Professional, with its default settings. Apart from these I also check SpywareBlaster for updates every day.

But sometimes, when I visit otherwise perfectly clean sites(hopefully the following problem has nothing to do with them), I get this pop-up into my machine, titled "http:drivecleaner.com" with the following message

"NOTICE: Your computer has tracks of all adult sites you had visited. In most cases, you are not even aware of the files that get installed by themselves, violate your online privacy and could compromise your career and your marriage.

These files leave tracks of your online behavior and even compromise your credit card's security. It is possible to clean up all the temporary and history records or your computer to remove these tracks.

Would you like to install DriveCleaner to check your computer for free? (Recommended
    )"

It doesn't matter whether I click on the cancel button or the x on top of the right corner, it will install itself. Trying to right click and close from task bar won't work either. The only way to get rid of it is to close it using task manager, though I had to try this three times before it worked without also closing down my IE6 browser (Firefox would close every time) so I could carry on reading the web page. I cannot remember where the setting for blocking sites is on in Firefox but even in IE it made no difference, so the address in the title is not correct.

The pop-up is meant to look like a sincere - after all it does explain about those nasty files - and friendly service and quite a few people I know have been pleased to have their computer "cleaned". Or, like my friend said, "if you just click cancel it will leave you alone." - Of course it does: the pop-up has done its job! But I know that I haven't been visiting any adult sites, nor used my credit card on the net (or have its details anywhere in my computer). And of course I have my own security software I trust taking care of any tracks.

Does anyone know where this pop-up originates and how to stop it ever entering my computer ?

    Hello claptrap,

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
