I am very likely to switch to sBC over TimeWarner cause of cost. There are no other cable internet competitors and I will get tv cable too from who ever I end up with. TW is good but really is starting burn a hole in my wallet. I think the price difference for cable is about $40 and the interent is about $30, with TW being the more expensive one. Two things that worry me is, 1. if sBC would add extra cost that they aren't telling me about with their Dish Network and internet costs, 2. Is their a huge difference between dsl and cable internet- Performace wise and in means of their connection (does one connect to a phone line or such other concerns).

Depends what you buy, you can get 3 megs which is about the same as the average cable connection, or 1.5 or 768... Also depends on your distance from the phone company, if your to far they have to give you a weaker bandwidth. Performance wise its close to the same, the big difference is that DSL is dedicated to you, unlike cable which the whole neighborhood shares the bandwidth, so....5 hits you may see slow downs with cable.

DSL does use the phone line, you will get whats called a filter you have to put on every wall jack that a phone or modem connects to, DSL uses a higher freq to send data over the line and will cause static in your phone and the phone will cause it to disconnect if not filtered.

Im sure I missed something but im also sure someone will fill it in for me :)

Both dsl and cable will be affected by the number of users in the area currently on. Both cable will have higher bandwidth, but dsl is usually a more steady bandwidth.

I live in Vacaville California, it was about two years before dsl came out, and sbc upgraded our lines…they dug new underground lines…..then just before they came out with dsl, they redid our whole area with new lines, on the street level, as well new in ground lines, and a new box for the apartment I’m in…….somebody said, about sharing telephone stuff, but, our line is routed just about straight from end to end….I had some problems at first, and the call went from the repairman to the downtown office to open the port…..it took them a few tries, and three phone call, it the span of ten minuets, but no problems since………..I’ve had dsl for five years now. And every year, we do a new year contract, and they always send new equipment…..nothing is wrong with the old stuff, just that, as we all know, “new is mostly better”….

…..this next year, which starts in Jan. I going to ask for the wireless modem, and cut out one link, that I now have………have dsl modem, with a Linksys router, for girlfriends notebook……..wobbles

Must be a TW thing. Comcast most assuredly will never give you the number for your local company. When they took over, they changed all the numbers at the local office and removed all but the 800 number (which connects you either to somewhere in Canada or India depending on how lucky you are) from the phone book.

Depends on your dsl provider. For example, Qwest uses interleave, and pings are definately not lower than Cable. My experience is that DSL is more reliable.

With Qwest, I had 1 outage in a year, for about an hour.

So far, in the 4 months I've been with Cox, I've seen at least 6 outages, one of them being 24 hours.

I have SBC DSL for about 3 years now!!!! I am extremely happy with it!!!! I pay 19.99/month for up to 1300...but only get about 750, but that is due to the fact that I live in a VERY old building and a very old part of town that hasn't yet gotten new lines!! Still for the price, and the fact that I have never had any problems...I can't complain at all!!!!

That was my point. The only number in the phone book for the local Comcast office is the 800 number. Comcast also changed all the prior existing local numbers, so they are disconnected, so even though I had them before, they aren't working now.
