DSL Modem Brand impeding connectivity?

I have experienced slow and intermittant DSL service for two months. Finally, Verizon, my ISP, suggested that after multiple repairs in the central office and elsewhere were performed, that the problem may exist in the Westell modem they provided five years earlier. Unfortuately, they offered a choice of only one modem, which was very expensive, and only one shipping carrier which is unavailable to my address. So I purchased a new D-Link modem ADSL modem from a third-party company and connected and configured it. However, with this new modem connected, many web pages will partially or not open at all. IE crashes frequently, and FireFox doesn't perform much better. Verizon says they cannot provide specific tech support for this modem as it is not one of two brands they provide. I have since reconnected the old Westell modem and do not experience many of the issues I just described.

I suspect the problem exists in the configuration, but I am not so tech saavy as to determine this specifically. Please offer any suggestions. Thank you.

 

Verizon currently provides a Modem that it is actually a Modem/Router, and it does the authentication too.

If the D-Link is a Modem/Router too, it might be a configuration problem. However if it is a Modem only there is nothing to configure, and if it is not compatible there is nothing that you can do about it.

Get a New Modem from Verizon, ask them to ship to a friend or what ever that it can be shipped to, the whoever can then ship it to you.

If you get a new Modem from Verizon it is their responsibility to come to your house and show you that it works.
