I have a one year old desktop pc with Asus MB I7 cpu 16gb memory, Radeon HD Graphics 7900 3GB memory
The boot up drive is 500GB and has the boot loader. The other drive is 1TB. I want to clone or image the smaller boot up drive to the SSD. The SSD is 500GB and the smaller HHD is using about 150GB. I want to use the SSD to run windows 10 and all my programs and games. so it will be an entire cloning of the smaller drive. Then I'll replace the smaller HHD with the SSD. But will I be able to have dual boot when I start my pc. I have windows 10 on the 1TB drive and programs I still want to use.

How to do it and what software program is the best and easiest.

If too complicated, I'll take to Radio shack computer guy and have him do it but it will cost me.

I did exactly what do want to do I tried a number of migration/cloning software programs and found the best and easiest was Easeustodo Backup it has a cloning feature my HD was 1Tb and used about the same as yours and cloned it to an SSD of 250Gb it works great.

yes but what about the dual boot. I don't want to lose that feature so I can use both the SSD and my other HDD

Sorry I cannot help you with the Dual Boot. Easeus clone makes an exact image partitions and all of the disk that you want to replace What I do if I want to use the hard drive is change the Drive letters in Disk Management and boot up to that Drive

    What is the other OS?

Both current hard drives have windows 10 in a dual boot configuration.

Since you're already dual booting, if you clone the 500 GB Boot HDD to the 500 GB SSD then swap the two, you should maintain the dual boot capability.

However, you may need to try more than one cloning software because some won't allow cloning to dissimilar hardware (ie. HDD to SSD). I know that AOMEI Backupper does allow it because I cloned my System HDDs to Samsung SSDs.

I'm gonna second mcdonah and AOMEI.

BTW, I must ask: Why are you dual booting Win10 and Win10?

incase one drive dies I have another full OS and I have a lot of programs

In your current configuration, if your 500 GB Boot HDD dies, you won't be able to boot your computer because the 500 GB drive is the one that's set as "Active" (check Disk Management).

You're better off cloning the Boot HDD and keeping the clone as a backup.

    Thanks brother,
My thinking is after I clone the boot HDD to the much faster SSD which will be my new boot drive, I save the HDD incase the SSD drives goes bad. But I read that they usually last up to 10 years.

my MB is Asus p6t deluxe with a SSD gate. Will I need cables to connect SSD, none come with the Samsung drive.
Will the pc already have the cables inside. I have installed cpu's and graphic card's myself and power supplies but that was easy.

Since it's a Desktop PC, the cables should already be attached to your boot drive and to the mobo. Just swap drives at the drive end of the cable.

As far as SSDs lasting 10 years, they COULD last even longer depending on what you do with them. My 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO had over 9000 hours of use on it when I purchased it used and it's still going strong.

yeah I figured that after I send message. My 1TB drive will be disconnected and I'll use the cable to connect to the SSD drive and then clone the boot HDD. After that is done, I swap out the boot HDD and use it's cable to connect the SSD and re connect the 1TB drive. That way when I boot up the SSD will be my first choice. I'll still be able to use my 1TB drive for storage.
I'm getting the Samsung 850 500GB, it comes with software that they say I should use. My friend just got one and he used their software and it works fine.
After my SSD is cloned and connected. I will go into bios and set it as boot. But do I have to do disk management in Windows so that it will be seen and active.
    Will windows10 still be activated.

I'm not quite understanding "My 1TB drive will be disconnected and I'll use the cable to connect to the SSD drive and then clone the boot HDD." Do you mean you're pulling the 1TB drive from it's enclosure and putting the SSD in the enclosure for the purpose of cloning?

The software you're talking about is Samsung Magician. In actuality, it's not needed. Windows 10 will rcognize that it's an SSD and automatically apply "Trim".

You won't have to go into Disk Management. Windows should remain activated. If it doesn't, report back.

yes, why won't that work? I want to clone the boot drive so I need to have the SSD installed.
Or I could do externally using a USB port. Do you have an easier way, the SSD package does not come with any cables.
Also my seta ports on my mobo are 3G/sec not 6. SSD can handle 6, is this a bottleneck and I won't see the best speed for the SSD. Asus P6T deluxe mobo is from 2012. But I bought this mobo in 2014 because my Intel I7 cpu will only fit this type of mobo.
X58 chipset, the ASUS P6T Deluxe supports Intel's generation Core i7 980; 3.33ghz processors in LGA 1366 package.
You mentioned a software to use to clone. Won't the Samsung software do that well or you mentioned AOMEI Backupper.

I did some research on Tom's Hardware and PC world. The proof is that for start up boot time, there is only 1.6 sec difference and programs start up almost the same time as the 6gb/sec. The real difference is the IO read-write times when a huge amount of data is being transferred. I was hoping my flight simulator would see an increase in frame rate. It probably would if I had a 6gb/sec interface mobo. The web sites that I read, say its much better than the fastest spinning hard drive and I will be happy with the 3gb/sec.
I'll get the SSD and save for a new mobo and faster cpu.
What would you recommend for hardware to give high frame rates for Xplane 11 which is a high demanding scenery flight sim.

If your 1 TB drive is internal like your 500 GB is, swapping the SSD and the 1 TB drive in the drive bay should work. I forgot that desktop PCs have dual drive bays — sorry about that, I've only got laptops.

Samsung Magician isn't for cloning one drive to another. That's where AOMEI Backupper would come in. I use AOMEI because it has the simplest interface and does the job rather quickly. I've tried other cloning software such as Macrium Reflect and the previously suggested EaseUS todo Backup and didn't like them.

You're going to need a high-end graphics card. Unfortunately, I can't make any recommendations there.

Something else I forgot (sorry again). SSDs are 2.5" wide while desktop HDDs are 3.5" wide. You're going to need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter for your Samsung 850.

What do you think about my comment about my mobo has a seta interface of 3gb/sec not 6gb/sec.
SSD is up to 6gb/sec. Wondering if it's worth it to get the SSD. Read my earlier comment about the research I did about:
"is it worth it to get a SSD when my mobo is 3gb/sec"

What's your budget for a SSD?

  22. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

It's worth it. You'll still notice a speed increase in everything INCLUDING the data transfer rate because SSDs can be written to faster than HDDs.

about$250 is my budget. I could go up to $300
And thanks for all your help. I am grateful.

What size are you looking for?

Do you need room to install games to the SSD?

If you clone a drive, you get a perfect copy, including the boot sector.
