I've broused through the messages but didn't find anything related to my problem. I've installed a second HD (drive 0) with XP. Drive 1 has 98SE. I can boot from either by changing the bios but can't get a dual boot setup from XP recover console. It only finds it's own drive, not the drive containing 98SE. I formated fat32 for both drives so that I can read files from either OS. This is not the final setup. I have hopes to order a single large drive soon which I will partition into two drives.

This is a practice and learning procedure basically.

Any help someone can offer would be appreciated. I've read mopst everything I can find on the topic by searching google but haven't come up with the correct answer yet. :-(

In order for the Windows XP native bootloader to work properly, you would have to install Win98SE first on the C drive, then install XP on the other drive. During XP set-up, it should detect the Win98 OS on the C drive & ask if you want to overwrite it, or install XP on another partition. In this way, the XP bootloader would give you the choice after set-up was complete. Was this how you did it?

Win98 was on the C:drive. When I attached the second drive it became D: There was no option on which drive to install XP. If I were to change the jumper settings to reverse the order of drives, would that help? Does that mean a complete re-install now of XP?

    Got it running, finally!!

Here's what I ended up doing. I switched jumpers on the drives to make the original 98 install the C: drive and the new drive D: which had the non -functioning XP install. Of course it then would no longer boot XP, because it could not find certain files. I found out later those essential files reside on the C: drive in a proper installation, even though the XP is installed on D:. Even after trying repair I could not get things to function, so in frustration I did a format of D: following that with a fresh install of XP. This time I got the choice of where to install XP as you mention in your reply. (it is possbile that screen did come up the first time around. Can't say for sure now. Tried so many things it becmes confusing). Google searches said XP has to be installed last and I understand now that the new drive, even though it's a physical new drive, not a partion, is still treated sequentially.

Anyway, all things are functioning as they should now. You're tip sent me searching in the right direction.

    Thanks.
